The bushrangers who stuck up an hotel at Welgett, on Friday, have been arrested. They were brothers named Cain, and were tracked for over 100 miles.
H.M.s. Raven has returned from the islands. The murder of Mr Walker on Pentecost Island was investigated, and the names of the murderers were obtained. The nrew of H.M.s Diamond will endeavour to capture them.
A scene occurred in the House last night, when Mr McElhone used language which the Chairman of Committee ordered him to withdraw, Mr McElhone delied th; chairman, and walked out. Me was subsequently named, and ordered to remain in custody during the pleasure of the House. On being arrested by the sergeant-ac-arms he apologised to the House and withdrew his remarks, and was thereupon released from custody. A special meeting of the South Pacific Petroleum Company rescinded the resolution of February 7, fixing the capital at -£200,000. June 1. Admiral Fairfax, replying to the Commissioner of Customs relative to surveying the dangerous currents in the vicinity of the Auckland Islands with a view to having the charts amended, states that to undertake the work will cost a large sum of money. A survey, he mentions, has already been made by the New Zealand Government, and no representation has been made that the currents mentioned are more than ordinarily dangerous, whilst the Admiralty's directions and charts are as perfect as is possible to make them. Adelaide, May 31. Parliament was opened to-day. The Governor's speech referred to the improvement in the condition and prospoets of the colony, which was mainly attributable to the bountiful harvest, the increase of the wool clip, aud the encouraging results of mining. There was every reason to expect that the expenditure during the present financial year would be well within the revenue.
