(ISV TEI.EWIIAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Auckland, Wednesday. The sole topic of conversation in town today is the tariff, which is generally condemned. Protectionists profess to be pleesed with it, but most people are dissatisfied, and predict that disaster will follow. The rates are raised beyond tho point which the community can afford, and yet not high enough to bo called protection in the true eense. The result must bo greater depression and an exodus from the colony. Taxation has already reached the limit which people can afford, anil new burdens will simply be intolerable.
