It has boon slated that, even if China does not obtain compensation for tiie injury to her subjects, the action of the Government in preventing the Chinese passengers from landing will cost the colony £50,000. In the Legislative Assembly the motion of censure 011 the Government was negatived by '11 to 5. May 24. The Governor has received a cable from Lord Knutsford, stating that the telegrams received from the colonies are being carefully considered by the Cabinet, and replies will be sent as early as possible. Mklhoukn'k, May 24. The Presbyterian Assembly forwarded a protest to the Government as to the treatment of the Chinese. Mr Gillies, Premier, in his reply warmly resented any interference on the part of the Assembly. The Assembly has forwarded a reply that they had a perfect right to express an opinion 011 a pubile question. Anm.AiDU, May 23. A Bill will be introduced in Parliament legalising the imposition of a polltax on Chinese arriving in the northern territory. Loxdox, May 24. The Daily News, and several leading provincial journals, support Sir Henry Parlies, and warn the Imperial Government against espousing the cause of China. The Marquis of Salisbury is greatly incensed at the publication of a report of an interview he had with the Chinese Ambassador 011 the Chinese difficulty in Australia, and Sir Henry Hailiday, the Knglish Secretary to the Chinese Legation, who aefed as interpreter, has been ordered to retire from that position.
