PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL
The usual monthly meeting of this Council was held at the Phienix Hotel, Morrinsville, at 11 o'clock yesterday. The following were present: Crs. Chepmoll (chairman), Mills, Murphy, Heaney, Williams, Dibble, Could, Browning and Brunskill. Mes-rs Saudcs and Puvitt, County Engineers, wero in attendance. After the confirmation of the minutes of tho last meeting the outward correspondence was read and adopted.
Si'icciAi. Ordkhh. — The spccial orders adopted at last meeting ro county roads in the Te Aroha Town District, and the special rate in the Patetere riding were confirmed.—Cr. Heaney, at the request of MiRich, manager of the Patetere Land Company, moved that tiie confirmation of the special order re the special rate bo deferred till next meeting of the Council. —Cr. Gould seconded the motion pro forma, but on its being put to the meeting it was lost. Datk ok Mektin'g.—Cr. Gonld moved that the next meeting of the Council be held in five weeks, viz., Friday, June 15th, and that the future meetings of the Council beheld every fourth Friday from that date. Seconded by Cr. Murphy and carried. Excessivk Valuation.—Mr W. A. Murray wrote, forwarding payment for his rates, and complaining that the valuation of £300 on his property was very excessive, as he had offered the land to the Government for £100, but could not tind a purchaser. He further stated that the valuation 011 Messrs Gray's, Rockliffe's and Murray's properties was also excessive, the proporties not being worth one-fourth of their valuation.
Camdkidge-TaupoKoai).—TheSecretary to the Public Works Department wrote, stating that the bilanco of tho sum voted last session for this road, viz., £-W, would bo handed over to the Council to be expended on this road under the supervision of tho engineer of the Council. Debentures.—Tho Secretary to the Treasury forwarded cancelled debentures to the amount of £1,320 Is (id. River Boakd.—A telegram was received from the Minister for Marino, suggesting to the county to join and form a committee with representatives from the othor local bodies interested and make a joint recommedation to tho Government on this matter.—Suggestions as to the formation and the procedure of the committee were received from tho Ohincmuri County Council. —Cr. Brunskill moved that this council approve of the suggestions thrown out by the Ohinemuri County Council, and they depute the chairman, Mr Chepmell, or his appointee to act as their representative on the committee, but that they decline to bo bound by the decisions that may be arrived at by the committee. — Seconded by Cr. Heaney and carried.
Waihou Biuimjk.—ln accordance with instructions received at last meeting, Mr JPavitt drew up estimates ro cost of bridge over the Waihou at Waiorongoinai. He reported that the bridge, such as was required, would cost £500. —Aftor considerable discussion, during which Cr. Murphy stated that tho man at present working tho punt would remove it unless thero were some prospect of the bridge being built shortly, the subject dropped.
Camiiriinj k-Oxford Road.—The Secretary to the Public Works Department forwarded a copy of the Gazette, in which the Order-in-Conncil appeared, declaring this road from the Cambridge borough boundary to Oxford to be a county road.—Mr James Bailey wrote, complaining of the bad state of the road between Norris' corner and Gorton. He said that the road was almost impassable, and although he wanted to send his machines to do some threshing at Oxford he was afraid to do so, as the road was so bad it would be almost sure to cause loss of life. He recommended that the engineer be instructed to report on what was needed to put the road in repair.—Cr. Brunskill moved that the council put a surfaceman on this road for three months. He said this was the least the council could do, seeing that the road was a county one, and if they would do that, the Taotaoroa Road Board would do tho rest of the work necessary on the road. —The motion was seconded by Cr. Murphy pro forma, but on being put, was lost—Cr. Brunskill then asked that permission bo granted to the Taotaoroa Road Board to keep in repair that portion of this road in the Taotaoroa Riding until next meeting of tho council. — Granted A similar application by Cr. Dibble on behalf of tho Matainata Roid Board was granted.
Tkamway Horses.—The Chairman reported that he had waited oil Mr Adams on this subject, and Mr Adams on behalf of the To Aroha Silver and Gold Mining Company, (Limited), had made an offer of £50 for the four horses, viz., £15 each for the three mares, and £5 for the grey horse. —Cr. Mould moved that Mr Adams offer bo accepted.—Seconded by Cr. Murphy and carried. Pcbi.icj Wokks Aor.—The petition on this subject, forwarded to the County Councils in the district from the Whangarei County Council, was read and received. Valuation Roll.— I The Clerk reported that, in accordance with instructions, he had made a number of alterations in the valuation roll, and several persons applied at this meeting to have their names inserted on the roll.
