THE M'CORMICK REAPER AND BINDER.

On Thursday afternoon a trial was made at the farm of Mr ]?. Cruse, Papanui, of a new knotter, patented by the manufacturers of tho above machine. The capabilities of the reaper and binder itself are so well known that anything than a reference to them just now is unnecessary. The trial, which was oondueted by Mr 13. Ackerman, representative of the manufacturers, was in every way successful, not a sheaf being missed in the tying. Tho now knotter is eutirel.v different from its predecessor. All the complications known, such as plunger bolt, plunger bolt away bar and connections, slide frame, tucker, tucker stud and brace, knifearm, plunger cam, &c., have been dispensed with, thus making the new tyer so simple that any ordinary farm labourer can operate it successfully without first having been instructed by an expert, This new tying device contains pnly seven pieces in all, and its work may he briefly described as follows : —The needle having placed the sccond twine into Hie disc, the latter makes onehalf revolution, and brings tho twine into the knotting jaw, where it is again securcly held until the knife cuts the twine, when the sheaf is ejected by the two discharge ar.ms on to the ground, The twine-holder is self-adjustable, and is so made that it will regulate itself to any lcirul of twine without altering the tension spring, au improvement of the greatest importance where difficult}' is experienced in obtaining even twine.— Chriatchurcli Press, March 31st.
