Ordinary Meeting.

Tho usual monthly meeting was then held, the same Crs. being present, with the addition of Crs. H. Gillett and J. S. Bond,

Tjlu Store ok the Foreshore.—Tho request of Mr (jr. Clark that he be permitted to remove his store from the Karapiro foreshore was granted.

Tiik Skating Rink.— A letter from H. McCrae, junior, secretary of the Rinking Club, was read, aecj|iting the Council's terms for the uce of the Hall, at 10s per evening. Also letter from Mr G, W. Russell, stating that if he had known tho Council would accept the offer of the Rinking Club, which they had previously refused, he should not have moved in the matter. He declined to take tho lfall on other nights, as he would not outer into competition with tho club ; but pointed out that his offer would have represented -K!) net, while the not gain from the rinking Club would only be £3 J 2s. Thornton Road.—Mr F. I. Houghton, Church Secretary of the Baptist Tabernacle wrote, calling the attention of 'the Council to tho dangerous condition of tho Thornton road near the corner of Mr Henson's property where the bank is some two feet higher than the watertable, and saying that people are liable to drive over it on a dark night.—Cr. Priestly said it was certainly a dangerous spot and suggested that it be fenced. —Cr. Ferguson thought there were many worse paths in tho town. Referred to the Works Committee with power to act. Government Suusidy. — I The Council were notified by Mr J. C Gavin, Secretary to the Treasury, that the mini of £04 19s Id had been remitted to tho credit of the borough account. Barded Wire Fences. —Mr D. Carnaclian wrote, asking the Council to cause Mr Meredith to remove a barbed wire fence that he had erected on an allotment facing the Thornton Road, which had injured one of his cows.—Tho Mayor said they had not enforced tho by-law regarding barbed wire. —Cr. D. Richardson thought Mr Carnachan should bo informed that it was a breach of the law to allow his cow to be at large.— The suggestion was adopted. Tho correspondence as read was then adopted. Report op Works Committee. —The report, after mentioning works done during the month, recommended the following to be done (sravel pit at McFarlano's to bo fenced in ; a culvert at Fogarty's be further improved ; and that the footpath near Mr Pierce's in Alpha-streot be improved.—Tho report was adopted. Estimated Receipts and Expenditure. —The estimated receipts for tho year wore £780 Is lOd, and the expenditure, !)s lOd. This will enable tho bank overdraft to be reduced by £131 12s.—Cr. Priestly thought it very satisfactory.—Cr. Gillett proposed, and Cr. Priestly seconded that fclip i'qugh estimate of proposed receipts and expenditure of the council for the financial year ending 31st. March, 188!), as submitted be approved, and that public notice he given in terms of the Rating Act, 1875, and Municipal Corporations Act, 188(5, that it is the intention of the council to meet on Tuesday, 12th June, 1888, for the purpose (if making a rate of Is it) ths £>, for the year ending 91st, March, 1880, payable in one sum at the office «f the treasurer, on August Ist., 1888.—Carried. Ghuy-htuekt.—Cr. Webber suggested that Grey-street from Queen-street to Alpha-street should be formed.—Referred to the Works Committee to inspect the street, and report to tho next meeting as to the probable cost.
