THE SCULLING RACE.
(By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Sydney, Miiy 5. The sculling race between Hanlan and Kemp for tlie championship of the world, and £500 a side, was rowed on the Paramatta this afternoon. A commission of £5000 from Victoria was invested on Hanlan. An immense crowd occupied all the points on the river. The weather was fijie, but owing to a sou'-wesfc breeze the water was rather lumpy. The men got away together as the word "go " was given, but in the lirst few lengths Kemp got a lead of halt a length. Hanlan, however, soon got on level terms with him, and both settled down to a desperate race. Up to Putney the race was most interesting, but here a foul occurred between them, and Hanlan, having the best of it, shot ahead, and rapidly placed four lengths between himself and the Australian. Kemp then made a most determined effort, and he was not long before only half a length separated the two boats. Hanlan spurted time after time, and endeavoured to wear Kemp down. The excitement was intense. Passing the boatshed Hanlan was hopelessly in the rear, and Kemp, sculling away from him, won very easily by a length. Time, 21min 'iGAsec. The race is said to have been one of the finest ever rowed on the Paramatta River, May 6. Hanlan entered a protest against Kemp on the ground of having been fouled, but subsequently he withdrew it. May 7. Hanlan declares lie \<'ill never row another race beyond those for which the fixtures are already made. He returns to Canada to settle there permanently.
