Melbourne, May 1. The Government have prohibited the landing of all Chinese passengers for the future. By au Order-in-Council issued to-day all i hinese and Eastern ports, including Singapore and Hongkong, are proelaiued infested ports under the Health Act, and the quarantining of every vessel with Chinese passengers is authorised. A compromise has been effected between the Government and the captain of the steamer Afghan, by which the latter foregoes his right to land jiwelve Chinese which he is entitled to do', on the Government agreeing not to fine him £100 pel head for all in excess of that number. Arrangements are being made for the transhipment of the Chinese passengers booked for New Zealand. Mr Edwards, the theatrical agent, attempted to murder a man. He drew a revolver, firing upon him twice. The cause of the outrage was familiarity with the former's wife. The attempt to murder was not successful. Adelaide, May 1. A railway train dashed into a buggy crossing the railway line, and killed a man named Hamblyn. His wife sitting beside him was injured, and is not expected to recover. The same mishap seriously injured another man. Sydney, May 1. A ballast train ran off the rails on the northern line this evening, and was completely wrecked. The fireman and driver had very narrow escapes. In consequence of the sequestration of the estate of Mr A. H. McCulloeh, jun., M.P. for Central Cumberlaud, hia seat has been declared vacant. £1000 to £800 has been laid on Hanlan for the aquatic contest on Saturday. The Government have decided to replace the present trams by the cable syarem. Drnitt, manager of the Commercial B.ink, Tinonee, has been committed for trial on a charge of embezzling £1500. A number of rabbits inoculated with M. Pasteur's microbes on Saturday were found to be alive and healthy on Monday. The experiment is not regarded as conclusive, as some of the microbes may not retain vinil-nco, and M. Pasteur's agent will probably cultivate fresh microbes. Brisbane, May 1. A difficulty has arisen between Trickett and Hanlan. The latter's fiual deposit was not paid on due day, and the former claims a forfeiture. Hanlan objects, and the money is to be posted if time is delayed, but Triokett persists. Sydney, March 2. The Government have called fresh tenders for the construction of 50 locomotives in the colony. Adelaide, March 2. Dr Reilly has been consecrated to the see of Port Augusta, The ceremony was conducted by Cardinal Moran, Fathers Ohastignon and Kirk of New Zealand being present.
