NEW SOUTH WALES AND THE CHINESE.
PROPOSED POLL-TAX OF £200. (by electric tklkgrapii.— copyeigiit.) Newcastle, May 2. At an influential public meeting, it was resolved to ask the Government to introduce a Bill, imposing on Chinese a polltax of £200, and a residential tax of £20. The meeting strongly protested against the relegation to the Imperial Government the right to legislate on the Chinese qnestion which was a matter purely for the colonies to consider.
