WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL

e The usual monthly meeting of the Waikato County Council was held at the Council Chambers yesterday at 2.30 p.m. There were present:—Crs. Primrose (chairman), Smith, Forrest and Johnson. Mr T. G. Sandes, County Engineer, was in attendance. Auc'TiONKKit's LicEVSB. —An auctioneer's license was granted to Mr G. A. Laidlaw, of Huntly, in accordance with his application at last, meeting. Local Option*.—Mr J. I'. Somerset was appointed presiding officer for the local option poll at Rangiriri. Defaulters List.—The C!eik reported that there wore 7l> name* on the defaulters list for the 11-ingiriri distiict. Special Rate.—The A-isN'.ant Controller of the Treasury wrote, asking if tiie Council had levied any special rates during tho past year, and if so, for what purpose.--The Clerk replied that no special rates had been levied. Public Works Act.—Tho Whangarei County Council sent a copy of a petition to be forwarded ti the House of Representatives, praying for tho amending of th« Public Works Act for tho simplification of the moans of acquiring or exchanging lands by local bodies for public roads, and asking the co-operation of the Council. Tha Chairman was authorised on behalf of the count y to sign the petition. Kanuiuiki Ruhsg.—The Secretary to the Treasury reported that he had remitted 41282 4s 10d to tho credit of the Kangiriri riding. Tkxders.— The following tenders wore received for the construction of a bridge over the Whangarnarino creek at Mr Jeffries' farm, near Wairangi : —Sutherland and Bridge, £30 ; James Robinson, £3:") ISs; A. McGill, £38 4a Gd ; Alox. Douglas, £44 15s; R. Muir, informal.- Tho tender of Messrs Sutherland and being tho lowest, was accepted. Proctor's Road.—Mr Hill, the contractor for this job, claimed from the engineer on his going to inspect the work, an extra sum «f £4 10s, as he had to complete tho road through the swamp, made oisrlit chains instead of six, as in the specifications.—Cr. Johnson said that Mr Hill know before starting tho job that there were eight chains of road formation across the swamp, and had agreed to do it for the sum tendered for, viz., £13 10s, and clearly understood that no extras were to be allowed. The matter was deferred till next meeting. Pipes.—The Engineer was instructed to get a set of 12 inch pipes laid in the road near the late Mr Russell's place, as mentioned in his report, Gate.—Permission was given to Mr Ralph to place a gate across an unused road near his place. Balance-sheet.—The balance-sheet for the year ending 31st December, 1887, was as follows :—Receipts, £1840 9s 9d ; Expenditure, £1847 0.-? 4d ; balance, £2 4s 5d ; assets. £283 3s Sd ; liabilities, £415 4s 10d ; Riding Accsunts.— The state of the riding account on 31st March last, was as follows. In credit, liangiriri, £1(>8 18s 2d ; Cambridge, £75 17s 4d. In debit, Kirikiriroa, £175 7s (>\d ; Tanialiere, £83 7s Oid ; Cambridge town, £78, JSsqd, Payment.—The following accounts woro passed for payment :—Coombes, £11) Is 10d; Sutherland, £2 ; T. G.
