♦ (by topograph.— press association). Wellington, Wednesday. A magisterial enquiry into the circumstances of the stranding of the barque Weatherfield at Uhau on the Bth inst. was held today. There were no fresh particulars as to the vessel going ashore, but the evidence attested that after the strong winds there was a strong inset into the bight where the Weatherfield went ashore. The Court held there was a strong current setting into the Wanganui Bight, of which no mention is made in the New Zealand Pilot. That there was no evidence to show that Capt. Sherries knew or could by any ordinary means have known of this ; and that, although at 10.SO a.m. on the 7th inst. ho knew Ills position, at 3 a.m., when lie should have been 13 miles north-west of Kapiti, he was actually runniug ashore at Ohau. The Court held that Captain Sherries took all ordinary precaution, and that no blame could he attached to him for the "stranding of the ship; and that it appears advisable that proper steps be taken to verify the facts as to the alleged currents, and that such information be published for the information of mariners. Also that it is desirable at the same time that enquiry should be made as to the practicability and advantage of a suitable light being placed on Stephen's Island,
