PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.

• The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was held at Tβ Arolm on Thursday. Present: Crs. Chepmell (chairman), Gould, Browning, P.runskill, Murphy, Mills Heaney and Dibble. Special Meetings, A special meeting was first held for the purimse of considering tljo making of a special orcier, handing over tho control of the main road through the Tβ Aroha Town District to tho Town Board.—Or. Mills asked if the Council intended to hand the ruad over without allowing any money for repairs.—Tlie Chairman said yes, as the road was now in pood order.—Cr. Murphy thought this rather unfair, anq moved that the Council pay ()iie half of tho cost of the maintenance.—Seeonded by Or. Mills, and negatived by 0 to 2.—The Chairman then moved that'the main road running through the To Arolia Town District be handed over to the ocmfcrol <)f tho JocaJ body from the 12th' of May next. He explained that owing to the formation of the Town Board the county were now unable to obtain rates suflicient to maintain this road, and it was but fair that the B,oard win received the rates should keep their own highways in repair.—Or. (Jou'd seconded the motion, and remarked that lie had paid in rates to the county £250, wlnkt the sum of t'lQ only had been spent in his riding. such rote be made and levied. Carried nein. con. Ordinary Meeting. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The reading of the correspondence was adjourned to receive two deputatons. Track to thk Minks—Messrs Gavin and Meliiver presented a petition signed very numerously asking that the track up the hill to the mines be put in a state of repair before the winter month?, as traffic had largely increase I and was still increasing every day. The sum asked for was £75. After hearing the deputation Councillor Murphy proposed and Councillor Gould seconded that the request lie granted. Carried and the engineer was instructed to call for tenders for the work. Thk (Joudon Sctttkmkxt. — Messrs Munro and Gapes wure introduced by Cr. Murphy and asked for the expenditure of £30 on ii side road at the Gordon Settlement to enable settlers to got on to tho main road. They (the sutlers) wore now spending £90 on the main road and would do so year by year so that that road would be no expense to the Council. Cr Murphy proposed and Cr. Mills seconded that tlio amount of £30 (the engineer's estimate) be granted. Carried nsm con. Baxcjuet to Mr Adams. —Mr Gavin, chairman of the Hanquet Committee at Waiomngomai. asked for the pleasure of the company of the members at the banquet to be given to Mr Adams that evening. They were anxious to have the members present to help to commemorate wh-tt might be considered a new, and ho hoped a successful, era in the history of the goldfield.—Resolved that the Council adjourn from six o'clock until nine, tho next morning. CoiuiKSL'OXDKN'OE. —To Mi , Haselar, stating that the swamp where he wished a culvert erected was not on a public road.—To the Taotaoroa Road Board, stating that the Cambridge-Rotorua road was not a county road, and tho Council could not therefore undertake repairs.—To Alex. Russell, stating that tho county could not build the bridge he asked for. —To tho. AssistantSurveyor General and the Registrar of Lands, asking for information re roads in Patetere proposed to be closed. —A deed, accepting tht dedication of roads in Patetere, was forwarded for the signature of the Council. Resolved to accept the roads and sign the dead.—To the Undor-Secretary for Public Works, asking for information as t,o what Government roads existed in the county. Ho replied that the CambriiigeRotorua, road was tho only Government road, and that tho Government were now taking steps to hand it over to the county in terms of Section SO, Public Works Act, I.SS3. He had no information relating to county roads. —Letters were l-ead from Mr I). Craig, asking for an expenditure of £3 10.; on his road, and he would do the metalling of the same. Request granted.—Mr A. Russell wrote ag.iin, asking for his bridge to be built. Resolved ti> adhere, to the original intention not to build it. —An offer was made to take charge of the donkey engine on the tramway but it was resolved that the engineer take charge of if a:. Request granted.— The Secretary to the Waikato Ho-pital and CliiivitaW« Aid IW.nd wrote, stilting that the Council's contributon h;u' been fixed at £'774 and asking for somo portion on account, to enable them to cauy on tho institution. It was res lived to pay one half the amount (£387) at once.—Mr J. H. Rowe applied for a license to slaughter cuttl'3 on Lot 1.2, Block 11 Te Aroha survey district. It was resolved to grant tho license ; the applicant to conform to all the provisions of tho Act and Hio bye-laws in force. —Mr Howe said tho slaughter-house would be more than six chains from the river and more than five chains from the road.

Heaney moved that the petition tie taken into consideration at the next meeting of tlin Council.—Seconded by Cγ. Biunskill and carried.

BlUl)«K. —Or. Gould introduced the subject of the erection of a bridge at Murphy's lauding. At present tho Council paid £3(i per annum for the punt, and he therefore proposed that the Council take steps to ascertain the cost of a bridge over the river there.—Seconded by Cr. Heancy and carried.—The engineer was instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost. Road Closing.—Cr. Dibble- presented plans and documents re the closing and exchange of certain roads at Matamata, showing that everything had been done in accordance with the Public Works Act by tha Matamata Road Board.—lt was resolved to confirm the action of the meeting of ratepayers, and the roads were declared closed.

Tafapa-Te Aroha Road. —Re the new road from Tapapa towards Te Aroha, for which £l. r )00 has been borrowed under the Loans to Ijocal Bodies Act. —Cr. Ileaney stated that the whole object of the loan was to enable tho company and property owners to sell their land, and that a blank being left through Matamata the road would be useless for traffic. —It was resolved to hoid.the matter oven , until something definite had been arranged for carrying the road through the whole way.—Cr. Dibble said that the Matamata [load Board were not prepared to do anything on their portion of the road. Closi.w oi.' Roads at Lichvield asd Patkteiik.—Or. K'.'anoy explained that the; alterations were required solely for the benefit of the company, and would not affect the public in any way, or do any harm to auyoii". Auiuuui/ruKAi, Boards.— The Chairman explained the action that had been taken re the formation of "Agricultural Boards" by the Waikato County Council. He had voted against the proposals mainly because it would cost money, and nmv-a-days lie felt sure that tho great body of ratepayers would strongly object to any more taxation, but the motion was carried. He asked the council what they would liko him to do in the matter.—After soma discussion, during which it was clearly shown that all the members were very strongly opposed to tho whole affair, it was moved and seconded by Crs. Heaney aud Could respectively, "that the chairman be instructed to decline to continue to net on the committee for the formation of Agricultural Boards. —Cr. Bruuskill moved an amendment to tho effect that the chairman be requested to act on the committee for the purpose of conserving the interests of the county as far as possible.—The amendment lapsed for want of a seconder, and the motion was carried. NOTiCistj oi;' Motion , .—Cr, Gould moved that the future meetings of the council be held at Morrinsville. —Seconded by Cr. Dibble. For the motion : Tho Chairman, Crs. Smith, Browning, and Dibble. Against: Ors. Brunskill, Mills and Heane.y. Cr. Williams' motion re the refunding of £30 to the L.and company, spent on the Lichtieid road lapsed, owing to Or. William's absence. —The same fate befel Cr. William's notice of motion re the standing orders. —Cr Mill's notice of motion, re the fixing of the County ofiice close to the place of meeting was withdrawn by consent. —■ Cr. Gould gave notice of motion for next meeting. "That the rules for lhe conduct of Council meetings at present in existence be abolished.
