TE AROHA.

MtNisTKiHAi, Visit.— The Hun, Miniver of J^iiucii tioii and Mar'nu arrived here cm Friday afternoon, from the Thames via Paema. In thn uveiiiug Ins received a deputation from th(j Town Hoard, who subti.itle.ii tn lii'U a statement of tlio views cif tins residents of this ami this surrounding districts, relative to tho extended powers of riwr control grantod to the Thames Ha-r-Ivimv lioiir.l. Mi- Fisher, in replying, stated that tho iiiattei- h-id on several occasions bi>gn brought under his notice, and Ihat botli MrJ. 1!. Whytn and Mr \. J. C.idm.iu had inoi-fi than once interviewed him on tho subject. lleing in Auckland lio had considered it his duty to visit tho districts nlFeeted by tho proclamation in order to make a full enquiry. Ho had heard both sides of the question discussed by members of deputations that waited mi him at tile Thames, and tho views of the Oliineinuri settlers had also been placed before him. From all that ho had heard and that had emne under his observation he was satisfied tho up-river districts hatl just cause for complaint. He had no hesitation in statins; his opinion that tho proclamation granting the extended powers to tho Harbour Board should bo rescinded and on his return to Wellington he would bring the matter bnforo his colleagues with the view of having the wishes of tho up country settlers carried into effect. It was explained to the Miuister that few persons were aware he intended visiting Te Aroha. The Piako County Council, a body hrgely interested, had just concluded their monthly meeting here a few hours before his arrival. The members had returned to their homes, but if they had known that he was coining to the district a deputation from that body would also have waited upon him. The question of the daily mail (service between Auckland and To Aroha was then brought under tho Minister's notice. He carefully noted the representations made to h : m, and promised that he would endeavour' to have the matter considered on his return to Wellington. After thanking the hon. gentleman for his courtesy the deputation withdrew. On Friday afternoon Mr Fisher visited most of the places of interest in Te Aroha, and on Saturday morning drove to Waioi-ongoinai, returning in time to leave by tho train for Auckland.

TnoJ(i<so.v's Tuauic—Some time ago tho Town Board wri.to to the Government in support ol the action taken by the Tauraiiga County Council with respect to the unexpended 'portion of the money granted fur Tlmmpson's creek, amounting to more than £!)00. On Friday a communication from "Wellington (boing a copy of a letter sent to Mr Kolly, M.H.R.. mi the subject) was received by tha chairman of the Town Board, and it \n therein particularly admitted that the olaim of the Tauranga Council is a just one, but as the Government will not be in a position to make further grants for some years to come, and us the £!K)0 would only suffice to make a beginning with the work proposed, the advisability of spending money upon a road whicjh may He uncompleted for a number of years may fairly be questioned. It, however, the couucil will undertake to carry out the work to its completion the lioverument will, on certain conditions, and to the extent of the £'JOO, subside the amount that the couucil may oxpend in constructing the road.
