SERGEANT MAJOR CARLEY'S RETIREMENT.
The following regimental order has been issued by Col. Noake, commanding the Ist Regiment of the New Zealand Cavalry, and bears very high testimony to the esteem in which Sergeant Major Carley is held by both officers and men who have served with him. This is all very well in its way, but is little satisfaction to a man who has devoted all the best years of his life to soldiering, and has now to face the world and begin life again, and that too with a large young family :— Regimental Order.—Head Quarters, Wanganui, 17th February, ISStf.— Owing to the exigencies of the colony, the services of our instructor, Mr Carloy, have been dispensed with. Mr Carley has been instructor to the cavalry for thirteen years, during the most of which period ho has boon under my command and observation, therefore, I cannot allow him to leave us without bearing testimony to his ability and zeal as an instructor, and placing on record the fact, that during his protracted service, he has invariably discharged tho onerous duties of his office so as to command tho confidence of his commanding otticer, as well as the esteem and respect of all who have been brought under hia tuition. The severance of Mr Carley's connection with the regiment as an instructor is a regrettable circumstance, and I feol confident that 1 (jive expression to the feeling of everv member thereof in conveying to Mr Carley our regret at his leaving us, together with our united hearty good wishes for his future welfare.—(Sgd.) M. NoAkii, Lt.-Colonel, Commanding Ist. llegiinent N.Z. Cavalry.
