LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS.
(by telegraph.—press association). Wellington, Wednesday. TllEquestion as to the power of the Government to remove the Provincial District Auditor, is assuming a peculiar aspect. Mr R. McAlister, who received notice from the Government some time since that his services would be no longer required after tho end of last month, disputes the power of the Government to remove him from olfice, and has occupied his office until to-day. He has, however, been evicted. On arrival this morning, he found the doors of his office locked, and was informed by the chief messenger, that orders had been given te exclude him from occupation. There will probably be somo further interesting developments in connection with this matter, as it is understood the question will crop up next session. John McKenzie Macdonald, a prisoner in the Terrace Gaol, who has served 17 years penal servitude, has been released from custody on account of enfeebled health, through old ago, nnjtho certificate of medical authorities. Over 17 years ago Macdonald set fire to an hotel in Whanganui, and a lodger was burnt to death in the building. He received the death sentence, but this was afterwards committed to penal servitude for life. Several attempts have since been made to get remission of his sentence, but without avail.
