HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers, Hamilton, on Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock. T'<t fallowing councillors wore prosmt: Crs. Knox (in the chair), Sandes, Salmon, Wood and 8011. Aroi.ofi v.—Before reading the minutes the Clerk read a letter from His Worship the Mayor apologising for his absence. OfiDKHS.—The following orders oil the contractor for the saley.wis were received : —Auckland Timber Co., £44 Is 9d ; .1. T. Home, £74 ; W. lVacock, £5 10s ; C. liarwood, Cr. Sandes moved that the Conncil recognise the orders and that they be left with the clerk to pay as far as the progress payments on the contract will allow. —Seconded by Cr. Salmon and carried. Band.—Lieutenant .1, S. Edgecumbe wrote acknowledging the receipt of tho instruments for the use of the Volunteer Band. Hospital Boakd.—The secretary of tho Hospital and Charitable tVid Board wrote, forwarding a copy of tho resolution passed at the last meeting of tho Board, " That a letter be written to the Hamilton Borough Council, returning their account of £0 10s "Jd, and stating that the Board is not liable for the items charged previous to the 17th August, 18SI1, and that an amended account including all the items entered in the Borough Council account, subsequent to the 17th August, 188(i, be forwarded to the Council, together with a cheque for that amount," and enclosing amended account amounting to £2 3s with a cheque for that sum.—The Chairman moved that the clerk be instructed to act in accordance with the insti uetions in the the minuite book, and hand the matter over to the Council's solicitor. —Seconded by Cr. Sandes and carried. Hospital Ratk.—The Secretary to the Waikato District Hospital and Charitable Aid Board forwarded a copy of the resolutions passed at the Board meeting, making the levy for contribution for Hospital funds {or the current year amounting to £!)1 7s 4d.—The Chairman moved that progress payment of £25 be made to the Hospital Board. — Seconded by Cr. Sandes and carried. SALEYAnns. —Mr Buttle acting for Mr John McNicol, wrote f»r permission to hold the first sale in the borough yards, and asking on what date they would bo ready for sales. He stated that he would use his best endeavours to make the Hamilton sales successful.—Cr. Bell moved that the application of Mr McNicol be granted, and that he be informed that the yards would be ready for the first sale on Wednesday, MaySlth. Seconded by Cr. Salmon and carried. Vincent's Duai.w— Mr Vincent wrote, asking for a definite answer, whether the council intend doing anything with this drain or not, There not being a full council present, it was resolved to adjourn tho matter for a fortnight. Lamps.—Cr. Von Sturmer wrote, apologising for his absence, and asking that considering tho present state of the borough finances, the motion standing in his name re the erection of two more lamps be allowed to lapse. Granted. Wohks Rkpoht. —The Foreman of Works reported on the various works done in the borough during tho month, and the report was adopted. Libhauy.—The recommendation of the committe appointed to decide about the library management, that the Mayor take the necessary steps to bring the Public Libraries Act, 18(>!(, into force within the Borough of Hamilton, was adopted. Cook-strkht Dkain'.—The Works Committee on account of the financial state of the borough made no recommendation on this subject.

I'OUNDKKKI'UII's Uki'Out.—The following roport was received from the poundkeoper : —Hamilton, 9th April, 1888. To the Mayor and Councillors of the Borough of Hamilton.— Gentlemen,— I beg to hand in my report for the month of March last. There have been 10 head of cattle i m pounded, and 23 dogs registered during that month. I have also collected the following money :— Pound fees, 17s; park reserve, 19s 6d ; Bradley's paddock, £1 Is ; Hamilton West common, (is ; Hamilton East common, 2s ; registration of 23 dogs at Ss, £5 15s ; 1 duplicate collar, Is. Total amount, fiß 16s. Enhixekr's Kbi'OHT.—The Engineer's report was read as follows and adopted :— Hamilton, 10th April, 1888.—His Worship and Councillors, Borough of Hamilton. Gentlemen, —I forward herewith a certificate for one hundred and forty pounds sterling for Mr John Wright, contractor for the Hamilton saleyards, being first progress payment due on the job. His progress with the work has been but slow, owing to his not having been able to obtain his posts, but these are now coining to hand, and he will got on much more rapidly. The rest of the material is on the ground, except a portion of the rimu, and all his gates are made and material prepared for erecting the yards. I think the Council will be quite safe in fixing Wednesday, the 9th day of May, as the date for holding the first sale, it. being, I believe, intended to fix a Wednesday for sale days. The materials supplied so far are of the very best description, the puriri posts being of the very best I have over had to inspect.—l am, gentlemen, yours obediently, T. (I. Fencing.—The Cleric was instructed to have a part of the allotment 011 which the Chambers stood fenccd, in order to protect borough property, St. 0 kohgj-As I jay.—Circulars from Mr 11. W. Christmas, Tendon, with reference to the formation of a sooiety for the duo recognition and celebration of the festival of St. Reorcro, were laid on the table.. This being all the business, ths Council adjourned to Tuesday, the 24th inst., at 7.30 p.m.
