CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL

Thk ordinary monthly meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council was hold oil Tuesday evening. : His Worship the Mayor (Mr. Hally), Crs. Priestly, J. R. S. Richardson, WeVber, Clements, 3'ergusou and Bond. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Siikd on thk Foreshore.— Mr G. E. Clark wrote, asking to be allowed to remove a store erected by him on the Karapiro foreshore. The write said tho store had been of very little use since the railway had come to Cambridge, and as he had for a considerable period paid a high rental he thought he should now be allowed' to remove it.—The Mayor proposed that a committee, consisting of Crs. Clements, Priestly, Bond, and the mover, be appointed to consider the matter, and report to the Council at its next sitting.—Seconded by Cr. Ferguson and carried.—The Town Clerk said the members of the late Town Board fonnd they had really no light to charge rent, , r r Breaking up thk Footpath.—Mr J. Arnold applied for permission to open up the footpath opposite his premises, so that ho could make alterations to his cellar.— Granted. Thk Skating Rink.—Mr H. G. McCrae, senr., wrote, asking that the Public Hall be let to the Kinking Club as formerly.—The Council granted the request, the charge to be 14s par night, the council finding lights.— The Clerk said the floor had been badly damaged by rinking in previous seasons, and that it would cost £15 to put down a new one. Subsidy.—-A. letter was read from the Property Tax Department, saying that a voucher for £1)4 19d Id had been passed, being 75 per cent, on acconnt of subsidy.— The "Mayor said it had not yet come to hand. Thk Dispute with thk County Council. —The member for the district wrote as follows :—" Gisborne, April fi, 1888. Jus. Hally, Ksq., Mayor of Cambridge. Dear Sir, —I duly received yours of the 3lst. March, with enclosure, referring to the claim made by the Waikato County Council, and in reply I have simply to say that the facts of the case, so far as I understand them, will be fully and fairly laid before the Government for their consideration.— T am, etc., J. B. Whytk."—The Mayor said ho had written to Mr Whvte about the £72, said to be owing to the Waikato County Council, and had also sent him a copy of the award, in consequence of having seen that the chairman of the council had written to the member on the subject. He thought it well that Mr Whyto should be made acquainted with the other side of the question. The above was his reply.—Cr. Priestly was surprised that Mr Whyto had dealt with the matter at all.— The Mayor said he also was surprised, as it was merely a dispute between two local bodies; but as Mr Whyte appeared disposed to take action in the matter, he had written to him. , Thk Cost op thk Hospital —The Waikato Hospital Board notified the Council that the levy on the Borough of Cambridge was £78 14s 10d.—The Mayor said last year it was £31 L3s. Hamilton had been raised from £2(5 last year to £01 this year. The increase was caused by the valuation being made upon the annual value instead of upon the capital value.—lt was resolved to at once pay £40 on account. Public Works Committer.—The Works Committee recommended that the following gravelling be done : —Queen-street, near the railway station ; Lake-street; Thornton road, from the railway crossing to the Tabernacle; and Alpha-street. Thore were also several other small jobs mentioned. —The report was adopted. Defaulter's List.—The Clerk laid on the table a list of persons who had not paid their rates.—The Mayor said it was most important that all rates should be paid, in order that the subsidy could be obtained.— It was resolved that summonses be at once taken out, so that the amounts may be recovered by next Court day. A list of defaulting tenants was .also presented, and the clerk was ordered to sue one who was considerably in arrears. The Balance-sheet.—Tho balance-sheet for the year was presented. On April Ist tho overdraft amounted to £070 15s (id, and unpaid cheques to the value of £72 'Js Id had not been presented. The legal overdraft for the current year will be about £762. The balance-sheet was adopted. Accounts.—The following accounts were passed for payment:—The clerk, £34 12s 7d ; W. Bartlett, £4 10s ; I). Stewart, £5 8s ; F, Buckland, 14s ; W. Stewart, £1 lis; J. Meredith. £13 18s (id. The Docs.—The Finance Committee were authorised to deal with the owners of unregistered dogs. We understand that they will be summoned immediately. Giiavkl. —It was resolved to let ratepayers have gravel for repairing footpaths free of charge, tho borough carter to do tho work and be responsible for tho pits being kept in repair. Surfaceman. — An extra surfaceman (Stewart) is to be employed for ten days. Fuiizk. — Crs. Bach and J. R. S. Richardson wore appointed to report on the furze nuisance, and give a list of owners of sections that were covered with it. I This concluded the business. I
