SHIPWRECK AT COOK STRAIT.

♦ [[IV TKLEGRAPH. —FRE.->S ASSOCIATION'.] Wellington, Monday. The banjuc Weatherfiuld, which is ashore at Ohau, has broadsided on to the beach with her head to sea. The vessel struck at four o'clock yesterday morning, and the crew landed safely at daylight, but as soon as the position of the ship was ascertained they returned on board. Capt, Sherries states that on Friday last lie sighted Cape Farewell, off which he lay becalmed for 14 hours, A breeze springing up on Sunday night, he set sail, his course being S.E. by K, aud this course he adhered to till he, was brought u|j standing near the mouth of the Ohau River. The captain is unable to account for his position. The weather both on Friday and .Saturday last is described by him as being thick and foggy, but nut fogey enough to obscure the sight of land, in faet, he saw Farewell lighthouse he says distinctly at 10 30 on Saturday morning. He states that on the breeze springing up on Saturday he hoisted sails and took a course which ho believed would take him through the straits, he admits that, he was 30 miles oat of his proper course, but is unable to account for the error, he is under the impression that there is a current setting in between Kapiti and the mainland, which might have thrown him out of his reckoning The Weatlierfi«M is owned by Greenshall, Conit and Co., Liverpool She was bound for Lyttleton on speck for whuut, she is an iron vessel, and was built by Robert Duncan, of Glasgow, and is 22 years old. Capt. Kendall is of opinion that the vessel can be got off if prompt measures are taken, she had 450 tons of ballast ou board. It is not known whether she is injured or not.
