RAGLAN.

. ♦_ — Equinoctial Gales.—For the week ending March 17th, we have had very rough and wild weather here, and the gales increased in force and violence under Friday night, the 16th, when a perfect tempest ranged, and rain came down in torrents, the wind increasing to almost hurricane force. Fences, etc., were carried away, and growing maize levelled to the ground. Since then the weather has been fine, though scudding showers now prevail. On Saturday evening the steamer Staffa arrived here from Kawhia, bringing goods and taking away a large quantity of flax, etc. Flax Mills.—Flax-mills still continue to be started here. Mr Mitchell has just sold his to Messrs Donaldson who are removing it to a site on the Pilot Station reserve. They expect to shortly be putting a large quantity of flax through it. The Late Wm. Johnston.—The remains of the late Mr Johnston were interred in the Okete Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, March 17th, settlers from all parts being present. The inclement weather prevented many others from attending. Great sympathy was expressed with the family. The deceased gentleman was well-known and highly respected, both here and in the Waikato district. Native Burial —The remains of the native lad, Walter Williams, were brought over from Hamilton for interment here on Tuesday last. The funeral took place at the native burial place, South Heads, on Thursday last, where a large gathering of natives took place. County Election.—Great discontent is expressed at the delay that is taking place in calling for a fresh election. A large number of candidates are coming forward. The Council meet here on Tuesday next. The Wharf. —The Whangaroa Board have now received the money for the erection of the wharf at Raglan. The Town Board expect to receive it shortly, when it is hoped the work will be pushed on.
