[By Electric Telegraph—Copyright, Newcastle, March 17. A strike is imminent at the South Waratah Colliery mine. Sydney, March 17. The ship Aristotnene, with 2700 tons of coal on board, cousigned to San Francisco, caught fire at Newcastle at five o'clock this morning. The fire is supposed to have originated in some flax which was stowed under the locker. At four o'clock this afternoon the fire was got under. The cost of the repairs is estimated at £3000. It is probable that the Corporation officers who have been suspended as being concerned in the frauds just disclosed, will be prosecuted. His Excellency Lord Carrington has received a despatch from Queen Victoria, stating that she was greatly gratified at the telegraphic accounts of the brilliant and loyal celebrations which took place in commemoration of the centenary of the colony. The locomotive tender question has not yet been definitely settled, but it is understood the workmen are disinclined to agree to the proposals of the manufacturers for a reduction of wages. The contracts will now probably be given to English firms. Griffin, the defaulting teller of the English, Scottish, and Australian Chartered Bank, wanted for embezzlement of £2000, has been arrested at Euroa, Lillywhite's cricket team are passengers by the Hauroto, which sailed for Wellington to-day. Melbourne, March 17. The abolition of the French wine duties, and the withdrawal of large supplies of Spanish wines to make brandy, are expected to result in a large increase in the sale ofpu re Australian wines in Europe. Melbourne, March 19. The Premier is about to ask the other colonies to combine to draw up a report of Chinese legislation for the benefit of Lord Salisbury. Mr Speight, in the report on the railways of the colony says they are worth more than the amount of the Victorian debt and that the balance-sheet will be a satisfactory one. The Messageries Maritime Company are building a large steamer for the Australian trade to steam 18 knots, and of 8500 tons.
