[By Electric Telegraph—Copyright, Newcastle, March 17. A strike is imminent at the South Waratah Colliery mine. Sydney, March 17. The ship Aristotnene, with 2700 tons of coal on board, cousigned to San Francisco, caught fire at Newcastle at five o'clock this morning. The fire is supposed to have originated in some flax which was stowed under the locker. At four o'clock this afternoon the fire was got under. The cost of the repairs is estimated at £3000. It is probable that the Corporation officers who have been suspended as being concerned in the frauds just disclosed, will be prosecuted. Mr Speight, in the report on the railways of the colony says they are worth more than the amount of the Victorian debt and that the balance-sheet will be a satisfactory one. The Messageries Maritime Company are building a large steamer for the Australian trade to steam 18 knots, and of 8500 tons.
