CAMBRIDGE PUBLIC LIBRARY.
A committee meeting was held at 4.30 p.m. ou Tuesday, for the purpose of appointiua a librarian. Present: Messrs J. Ilally, (chairman), R. W. Dyer, J. F. Thomson, W. S. Stewart, and K W. Sargent. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read, the applications for the office of librarian were opened and proved as follows : The Misses Young and Campbell, Messrs C. Cbitty, John Bright, Jas. Masters, H. G. W. McCrae, Samuel Cricket and H. W. Westby. Mr Masters enclosed a cheque for £10, and Mr Westby named Mr JO. Hewitt as his guarantee ; none of the others had named theirs. —Mr Stewart said he had heard great complaints as to tho lengthy hours.—The Chairman said it had not choked off applicants, at any rate.—Mr Thomson asked how they were to do about those who had not named their guarantees. In the ordinary course of things, they would be treated as informal. —Mr Dyer thought they ought to he received.—The Chairman thought it would hardly do to shut them out, thero were so many ; if it had only been one or two it would not have mattered. —Mr Stewart said ladies acted as assistant librarians in Auckland; and he thought Miss Young would be a suitable candidate. —The Chairman thought some of the work would hardly be acceptable to ladies. The duties were too mixed. They could collect the subscriptions, but would hardly like to have to sec after tho hall arrangements when a concert was given.—Mr Dyer said there might be occasion to turn someone that was drunk or disorderly out of the reading-room, and if a lady was appointed to the office tho duty would fall upon the gentlemen who happened to be present, and they would not care about it.—Mr Stewart missed several names that he would like to have seen in the list of candidates. If it had not been for the lengthy hours he would have proposed a lady.—The Chairman thought they had plenty to choose from. — Mr Thomson said a lady—who would have been in every way suitable—had told him she would have applied if the hours had remained as formerly. —Mr Stewart proposed that Mr Westby's application be accepted.—Seconded by tho Chairman, who said Mr Westby had done as much as he could while he had been there.—Mr I.lyer said Mr Westby was the most suitable of any of the candidates. —The motion was then put, and carried unanimously. It was resolved that member's subseiiptions be all made payable upon the same dates, the quarters ending on February 2.Sth, May ,'il.st, August 31st and November 30th. Up to the present each individual's quarter has dated from the time of joining. The accounts will now be worked out so that they all become due together. Tho Chairman said Mr Shirley had guaranteed to give an entertainment that would raise t'lo, to form the nucleus <of a museum, providing that each committeeman would give £1. Me thought it hardly fair for them to do tho work, and then bo asked to pay for it. It was resolved that tho Chairman and Messrs JJyer and N.irffent bo appointed to wait upon Mr Shirley, and urge him to go on with the undertaking, the committee promising to render him every assistance in their power, but not to give tl each, Messrs Stewart and Dyer were appointed to s.'loct a list of books to tha value of £5, ' to be submitted to tho committee on the 2~lh iust. The Chairman said it was understood [ that the librarian would have the use of the ; private room and garden, but tho question j of fire and light in the private room was left t in statu quo. t This concluded tho business, t
