WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL
The usual monthly meeting of the Waipa 1 County Council was held in the Council ? Chambers, Ohanpo, at 11.30 a.m. on Tues- . day. There were present: Ors. Lang (chairman), Hunter, Finch, Smith, Farrell, 5 and Urice. The County Engineer, Mr A. Armstrong, was also in attendance. The minutes of the previous meeting havS ing been passed, the outward corresponr dence was read and adopted. 0 Engineer's Report.—The Engineer's ret port was read as follows : —To the Chairr man Waipa Comity Council. — Sir, c —I regret to report that since the last meeting of the council, considerable damage e has been done to the Rotorangi swamp e road by tire. The portion of the load burnt is . between the Rotorangi Station and the bush, j about (!0 chains of which has been less or [ more damaged. These can be little doubt but that the fire originated by the carelesss ness of some person throwing down a lighted match whilst passing along the ! road. Owing to the very dry .itate of the ' scrub it spread with groat rapidity, and it | was only after considerable exertion that it ? was subdued. It was found the speediest ' way to effect this was by digging a trench . down the side of the formation, as in many places the fire had burnt its way under the s road and could not well be reached by water. This of course, while stopping the progress of the lire, broke into the forma- ' tion, which is nowhere tlon .; here more than | 15 feet wide. Consequently in many places the breadth of the road has been considerj ably reduced. As these placos wore dangerous and likely to lead to an accident to anyone passing especially in the dark, I asked for offers to have the road made up to its original width, and two were sent in : one from Win. Stewart, for 1 10s per chain, the second from Corcoran and Riley, at 8s per chain. I acccpted the • latter, conditionally, that the most dangerous parts only be repaired, till receiving the authority of the Council. It has been suggested to me that if the side of the road was sown with cocksfoot, this would stop the growth of the ti-tree, and thus to a very great extent lessen the risk front tire. The cost would not be great, as I believe £2 would purchase as much seed as would be sufficient for the purpose. Certainly this is a small sum compared with the amounts paid yearly for oxtinguishing Hres and reinstating the road. I would recommend that the plan be tried.—The works in Lyon and Whitmore-streets, and near the Wesleyan Chapel, Kihikihi, are completed, with a few triHing exceptions. I recommend the payment of £11 on this work. — The grading and gravelling contract near Hall's culvert on the Te Rore road has been completod in terms of the contract. I recommend the payment of £11 on this job. —Contract No. 80 : Gravelling Rotorangi swain]) road. The contractors are making fair progress with this work. I recommend that an advance of £14 be made on this work. —The contractor for Contract No. 81 is notdoing|thc work to my satisfaction, and I have notified him to this effect. Contract No. 82 has not yet been started, but the works will be well under-way by the next meeting. Contract No. 83 : Forming and gravelling near Ngaruawahia. This contract has just been started.—Contract No. 81 : Forming near Ohoto Creek Bridge. The contractors are making fair progress with this job.—Contract No. 85. —Forming and gravelling portion of the To AwamutuAlexandra road. The contractors for this job have just completed the works near Hall's culvert, and will now make a- start with this work.—Contract No. 80 : Grading near Walsh's, Ohaupo-Paterangi road. The contractor for this work is making good progress, I recommend an advance of £17 10s. —Tenders are due to-day for forming and grubbing portion of the AlexandraWhatawhat.", road near Mr Blackett's, Tuhikaramea riding.—l am, etc., Alex. Armstrong, County Engineer. The report as read was adopted. Ghavel.—The Mangapiko Road Board wrote, stating that they could not grant permission to the Council to take gravel from the Ford Bridge gravel pit, as the pit was now almost encroaching on private land, and there was 110 other seam of gravel about, should that one be exhausted. Water Troughs.—Mr F. J. Brooks wrote, calling the attention of the Council to tho state of the water troughs in Cainbridge West. He said that there was plenty of water at the troughs, but that it was ail running to waste. —Cr. Grieo said that the troughs had been knocked about lately by people who were short of water backing their drays against them so as to got at the water more easily.—The Engineer reported that thore had been some slight leakage at the lower trough near the bridge, but that it had been looked to. —Letter received. Ngaruawahia Road. — Mr W. Vant wrote about the state of this road opposite tho Wesleyan Church, Ngaruawahia, and asking that some repairs be done. —The engineer was instructed to get tho work done as requested, the cost not to exceed 255. Pukkkura Licensing District. — The Sectretary to tho Department of Justice wrote, asking the Council to recommend some suitable person to act as clerk to the Pukekura Licensing District, as no one had been appointed since Mr. Thomson had left. —Cr. Smith proposed that the Council recommend Mr N. T. Maunder for the position.—Seconded by Cr. Grice and carried unanimously. Slaughtering License.—John Cassidy , applied for a renewal of his slaughtering license.—Application granted on tho pay- . rnent of the usual fees. .
