BICYCLES ON FOOTPATHS.

TO THK EDITOR. Snt, —I endorse to some extent " Observer's " lottor ra " Bicycles on Footpaths," but a regard for veracity oompels me to take exception to his statement that the roads are good enough, (broad enough thoy certainly are) for bicycling. If " Observer " would take tho trouble to oarcfully examine tho centre of Victoria-street, and tako note of the extraordinary excrescences, and still more painful depressions that mark its course, putting loose sand out of the question, t think ho would be bound to admit that any bicylist having due regard to the safety of himself and machine would naturally prefer the comparatively smopth footpaths, and especially as no bye-law is yet framed prohibiting it. Nevertheless, uiir lass tljoir hearts are of the proverbial flint, ■' Observer's " tquchlngsappeal on behalf of the " safety of our children " should prove his most potent argument in causing cyclists to desist from their evil ways. Mind, I am not defending their action as regards riding on footpaths, but in common fairness I consider soiun latitude should bo allowed thorn taking into consideration the present incomplete state of the city (?) bylaws, and still more incomplete condition of the roads.—l am, &c. Bictomst, Hamilton West, 7th March, }888.
