MINING.
Mr Parkes, the inventor of a new process for smelting gold and silver ores, is about to come out to New Zealand for the purpose of introducing his system into the Thames district. A powerful company known as the Parkes' Golil and Silver Ores Smelting Company, has been formed in London to work the patent, and it is probable that works will be erected at Kopu, on the Thames river, at oner'. Pateterk Sand. —The trial of the concentrated auriferous sand recently sent from Patetcre for treatment at the Waiorongomai battery was, to some extent, satisfactory. Considerable difficulty was found in properly dealing with it, but a fair percentage of gold was obtained, and it was believed that with suitable machinery for treating it, the stuff will prove payable. Nothing is definitely known regarding the result of the prospecting operations by the Christ church company at Waitoa, but the belief prevails that the trials so far have been unsatisfactory. Discovery of Silver atTui.- A fresh discovery of silver bearing ore, is reported from the Tui creek district. Samples of the stone, broken from an outcrop of the lode, have been brought into Te Aroha, and appear to be of considerable richness, rivalling, in fact, the stuff, obtained from the ce'ebrated Champion claims from which the find now reported is abo>it a:i eighth of a mile distant. The discovery should gi-e an impetus to prospecting in the extensive area of untried country betwee i the Tui and the VVaiorongomai mines. In the latter locality rich argentiferous ore is also being obtaiue 1 iu the New Find and Silver King claims, and there can hardly be any doubt that a thorough exploration of the untried country referred to, will result in the discovery of lodes even richer thau those already found. Present appsaranees point to the conclusion tint in the development of its silver bearing lodes, the future prosperity of the mining industry iu this district will very largely depend.
