Almost every one of the windows in the building have been smashed by the lad. A rifle contest for £1 a-side will come off at the ranpi <>n Saturday next, between Privates H. Tristram and H. Hinton, of the Hamilton Light Infantry. In all probability a sweepstake match between other members of the corps will be tired at its conclusion. We have received the full text of the interesting lecture delivered by Major Wilson at Cambridge, and have concluded to reproduce it, for the benefit of our readers, in our weekly Supplement, rather than mutilate it in order to give it a bare report in our ordinary issup, which latter course would detract from its historical value.
The Theatre Royal Company, of Te Awatnutu, have fairly established for themselves an excellent reputation for their histrionic talents. As they are visiting other townships, we would be glad to see them extend their favours to Hamilton, and suggest that they repeat one of their performances «it the latter pluce for the benefit of the hospital. At a meeting of the officers, noncommissioned officers, and committee of the Hamilton Light Infantry, held subsequent to drill on Tuesday evening the ject of forming a b.md in connection with the company was considered, when it was resolved that a band bo formed, and th;vt applications for the office of bandmaster be invited by advertisement. News from Mozambique states that the native villages on the shores of Lake Nyassa, in Africa, have been attacked by a strong body of Arabs, and a terrible massacre has taken place. The missions of the Free Church of Scotland, known as the Livingstonia Mission, were attacked and the houses plundered and destroyed, but the members were not injured. Referring to the shipment of apples for the English market, we may state that, calculating DliOlbs of apples to the ton measurement, the total cost of forwarding the fruit, including rail, ocean and all charges, will bo a trifle under twopence per lb. The fruit should be forwarded for shipment from Auckland by the 2!) th March, in order to reach the direct steamer from Wellington. The average retail price for apples in England at the season these would arrive is about Sd per lb, tvhich allows a tine margin for profit.
It will "be seen by advertisement in another column that, following on our suggestion, an endeavour to form a band in connection with the corps is about to bo made by the Hamilton Light Infantry. Persons willing to bec.une members of the band are requested to leave (heir names with Gapt. Reid, 011 or before Saturday, March 10th.
There does not appear to be much enthusiasm in the colony to prowde exhibits for the Melbourne Exhibition, although strong efforts are being made to make the Xew Zealand Court worthy of the colony. Such apathy is short-sighted policy, and is certain to have an injurious effect mi the colony, in the samo way as was experienced by the indifference shown with regard to the Colinderies" Lxhibition held in London.
Messrs Mort and Co. of Sydney report as follows in their trade circular Wheat from the country is now arriving freely, but the prices are kept down by the easy markets in the southern colonies. In some districts the yield is not up to expectation, and many of thoparcelscoiuing to market are damp. Thero is good competition for best milling at from 3s lid to 3s 7d ; damp wheat, suitable for fowls'feed, is saleable at from 2s lOd to 3s.
We are pleased to learn (says the Oamaru Mail) that Mr David Grant, whose arm had to be amputated in consequence of it having been mutilated by a shark, is progreasing favourably towards recovery, and that he i» in good spirits and confident not only of being about again before long, but of being able to earn a good living for himself and his family. In connection with this matter we must mention a very kindly act which has been reported to us On liearin" that Mr Grant had been incapacitated for work, the Hon. T. W. Hislop telegraphed instructions to have Mr Grant a horses and cart kept at work 011 his behalf. Such a thoughtful and kindly act is deserving of being made public. In another column will be found the announcement of a consignment of Japanese goods received by Mr John Kmi», which will shortly be offered for sale. We draw particular attention to these goods, which form a special shipment direct from the Museum of Arts and Manufactures, and comprise very interesting and rare objects of art, together with numerous articles of general utility. The whole has been selected and catalogued by an expert of much experience. The shipment comprises Japanese manufactures and curios, many of which are admirably adapted for complimentary presentations, and will constitute a species of merchandise never before seen in the Waikato, There was a splendid muster at the ordinary parade of the Hamilton Light Infantry on Tuesday evening last, between 10 and 50 members rolling up. After inspection by Capt. Reid the company was put throush the manual exercise by the sergeants, and then marched out and exerby Captßeid in several company movements the new four-deep mode of attack. After drill the aijnnal meeting of the company was helij, fny the purpose of electing a new committee and secretary. Lieuts. Ooombes and Corporal Mines, I'rivatnsH. Tristram, W- Mayes, T. Aiexant'&r, Il> ]>illicar and K. Hammond were elected a* committeemen. The clerical work being too i heavy for one secretary to undertake, it was resolved that two secretaries bo appointed, 0110 to act as general secretary to the company, and the other as secretary to the p'immitpae. ftepgeant Hooper was re-elected as general jsecpetary, sr>,4 Lieut, lidgficumbc to fjlj the new oHjce.
