RAGLAN COUNTY COUNCIL

Till! monthly meeting of the Kaplan Countv Council, was hold at Whatawhata, at II o'clock, yesterday. Tho following Councillors were present: —Crs Mel>onald (chairman) Brooks, lsiirlcor, Cibb, Matthias, and Hodgson. Funzio Xuisaxok.—A circular was read, which had been -sent to various local bodies i« this district, asking for their co-operation in having tho Public Works Act extended in tne direction indicated by a resolution passed at the last meeting, for the eradications of srorse and sweet briar. Tho circular had been sent to the following County Councils Thames, Waikato, I'iako, Ohinemutn, \V Vino, Tauranga, and Waipa, Tiie only body from which an answer was received, was from the Waipa County Council, stating that they would support the action of the Raglan County Council m this matter. A copy of this resolution was also forwarded to tho Colonial Secretary, asking him to use his influence in having thb additions made to the Act. Nmv JSr.EOTIOX. —Correspondence was read from and to the Colonial Secretary the purport of whioh was that a new election was necessary, and would be hold as soon as possible, after the necessary information hail been forwarded to the Governor. County MAr.—Two lithograph sheets of the county showing the ridings were received from Mr S. Percy Smith, who stated that he would send a large coloured map of the county as soon as there was time to prepare fine. . Dkkbhhkh Paymkxt System.—lbe Chairman wrote to the Commissioner of Crown Lands, requesting him to pay into the credit of the county at the Union Bank of Australia, Hamilton, all monies lying to the credit of the county for the sale of lands sold under the deferred payment system.

SuiisiDV.— I The Chairman having written to the Propertv-tax Commissioner, asking for the payment of £17* Mi 4d subsidy on rates collected in the county in the year 188U-7, a reply was received, asking if they had not made a mistake in asking for the rates for LSSIi-7, as the county had only been in existence since .lannary lst.,lBSS, and stating that he would not certify for the payment o! this subsidy, also asking for information why it was charged. The Chairman replied that while other districts had been receiving large subsidies, the. road boards on whoso"rates he was trying to get a subsidy, had in past times to make the roads at their own expense, and also that with the assistance of the subsidy roads could be made to Crown lands which would likely be sold.

WMi'A-ItAor.AN Road. —A letter way sent to the Colonial Treasurer, requesting that'the. £250 on tho estimates for the Waipa]taglan Road, and the £200 grant for the road from Kauiwhaniwha to llarapipi, be placed to the credit of the county. A letter on this subject was also forwarded to Ma jor Jackson, M.H. LI., asking liiui to use his iuHucnce to get these requests granted. Council Ghamukks. —Tne Council applied to the Minister of Lands to have Part 1, of Lot 11, Town of Raglan, on which the council chambers stood vested in the council, as they wished to make some improvements to the chambers. Akatea Yillauh Sktti.kmknt. —Mr A. H. Smith, one of the Akatea village settlers, near Ngaruawahia, wrote, calling the attention of the Council to the state of the road between Raglan and Ngaruawahia. He said that lie and the other settlers had taken up their sections at this settlement oil the understanding that a road at least 10 or 12 feet wide wov'.cl have been made from Ngaruawahia, ;:c which they were to have half-time work for two years, and thai, a omit would be placed on the Waipa. These things had not been done, and now there was starvation staring them straight in the. face, as they had put what little money they had m their sections, and now could not alf-'t'd to leave them. The present Government did not seem inclined to fulfil the promises m:\deby their predecessors. He asked that the Council bring the matter before the _ Government, with a view to having the road completed and tho. punt provided.— The Chairman and Cr. Brooks both spoke of the way the settlers had been treated by the Government, being left with hardly any means of communication with the townships, and Cr. Brooks moved that the Government lie requested in the name of the council to carry (Hit the arrangements entered into by the late Government with the village settlers at Akatea. Seconded by Cr. Hodgson and carried. Cuuuoiui.i, Punt. —The Clerk of the Waikato County Council wrote asking the Raglan County Council to take over the Churchill punt, or if they did not do so the Government would Ise asked to take the punt over. On the motion of Cr. Brooks, seconded by Cr. Gibb, it was resolved that this council do take over the Churchill punt. Seal.—The Chairman moved that one large oval seal and one small oval one, both similar to the ones by the Waikato County be procured.—Seconded by Cr. Matthias. —Cr. Barker moved as an amendment, that only one seal, between the two sixes, bo procured.—The amendment lapsing for tho want of a scoonder, the original motion was carried. Punt at Hunti.y.—The settlers at Huntly wrote to the Government, asking them to erect a punt over the Waikato River at Huntly, and a reply was received from the Minister ot Lauds, stating that the Government would take no action in the matter until they ascertained what sum the settlers interested would contribute, and what properly constituted local body would have the control of the punt. Mr Harris therefore wrote on behalf of the settlers, requesting the Raglan County to take ' over tho pinit.— The Chairman moved that tliis Council will undertake its fair share of the working the punt at Huntly so soon as the punt is established, and would recommend that thoso interested rabe some funds a.-; suggested by the Minister of Lands —seconded by Cr. Brooks and carried. Rate. —In accordance with notice given at last meeting the Chairman moved that a rate of '/din the .£ be made and levied on all the rateable property within the county outside the boundaries of the Pirongia, Karioi, Whaingaroa and Town of llaglan Higlnvav Districts for the financial year emfing "Ist March 1888.—Seconded by Cr. Brooks and carricd. The rate on the separate districts will be as follows: —Karamu, £32 17s ; TeAkan, £11!) ■I* -td ; Onewhero, £3018sQ.]d ; Whangape, £11:.! -Is (id j total £2!) Ci 3s lO.j d. —The Clerkwas instructed to append to all demands tor t'utc; thq following' resolution o» the Council via., that' all rates unpaid by the 17th March, in order to got the subsidy, be sued for. The Council then rose.
