WAIKATO HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
The annual general meeting of the Waikato Horticultural Society was held at the Borough Council Chambers, Hamilton, on Tuesday last, at 11 o'clook. The following members were present: Mr L. O'Neill, vice-president, in the chair, Messrs Knox, Parr, Gelling, Barton, T. G. Sandes, Gaudin, J. S. Edgecumbe, Hatrick, R. F. Sandes, G. Mason, Campbell, and G. Edgecumbe, Hon. Sec. and Treasurer After tho minutes were confirmed, the secretary read the advertisement calling the meeting, and the election of officers for the current year was then proceeded with. Election of Okkichrs. —Mr L. O'Neill was elected President, and Messrs W. Dey, T. Wells, J. Walton, and H. Buttle, vice-presidents for Hamilton, Cambridge, Waipa, and f'iako respectively. Mr Geo. Edgecumbe was reelected Hon. See. and Treasurer.
Exportation ok Fruit.—Tho Secretary stated that in accordance with the resolution passed at the meeting held in November, the circulars recommended by tho Committee appointed for the purpose; of supplying Messrs L. T>. Nathan and Co. with the information they required re shipment of fruit Home had been sent out, but very few replies had been received, and even these had been discouraging.—The Secretary said that during a recent visit of his to Auckland lie had called on Mr Recs George on the subject of shipment of fruit to England, and he had received the following letter from him Auckland, 20th February, ISSS. Geo. Edgecumbe, Esq., Hamilton. —Dear Sir, —Re shipping fruit. The New Zealand Shipping Company have arranged to ship fruit per " Rimutaka," leaving the colony on sth April, at 110s per ton of 40 cubic feet, and 10 per cent, primage. It will require to be in Auckland for shipment on the '2flt.li March. The s.s. Coptic is coming direct to this port, but will not take produce, although it is possible she may yet make arrangements to do so. We enclose cost of freightandsliipmeut upon three tons. —Yours faithfully, J. W. Baubicr .VXD Co. J'.S.—Tho fruit will be placed in cool chambers, with temperature at 45°. Cost of three tons fruit for shipment "Rimutaka To Customs entries, 3s (id ; wharfage, 3s ; bills of lading and stamps, 5s Gd ; freight, three tons at 110s. £16 10s; 10 per cent, primage oil freight, £1 13s; total, £18 1.3 a. Insurance F. P. A., 20s per £100, and Is stamps.— A cross-table discussion was then engaged in about the letter, hut the subject dropped, as tho Society at present did not see its way to go into tho shipment of fruit Home.
Stkciat, Piii/.K.s. — Messrs D. Hay and Son's offered €1 worth of fruit trees as a special prize, but they had not said what the prize was to be for. It resolved that Me-sis Hay s prize be given for the best gallon of cider made last year in the Waikato, from Waikato grown apples. The following special prizes were, then offered : — Ml' L. O'Neill, £1, lor the beat collection of bottled fruits ; Mr C. J. W. Barton, 10s 6.1, tor the best dozen quinces ; Mr G. Kdgecunibe, £1, for the best factory or dairy cheese. Mr J. R. K. Hatriek, 10s for the best sack of oaten chaff.
Snow Committee. —The following gentlemen were elected a Show Committee, with power to add to their number. Messrs G. Ivlgecumbe, \V. Dey, Geo. Mason, A. Campbell, T. G. Sandes, .1 no. Parr, JllO. Chivers and F.J. von .Stunner.
Accounts. —Accounts for 17a (id were then passed for payment, and the meeting concluded.
