INTELLECTUAL DECAY.

TO THK KIHTOIt. | Sir,—One of the saddest sights that can be seen is that of intellectual decay, whether senile or otherwise, more especially is it pathetic when the decaying intellect has once been of a high order. Such a.spectacle is, I fear, afforded by your Alexandra correspondent, who says your special reporter in the King Country discovered a "beautiful lalte at Kopua." One of the phases of the affliction in question is loss of memory, a symptom which the gentleman has strongly developed. I never made any** 6 " allusion whatever to a lake at Kopua,"for I know as well as your correspondent that no such " beautiful'lake " exists. I feel sorry for the paper and the public, sorry for the paper, because under the painful circumstances, you must soon lose a valued Contibutor, and sorry for the public because tiiey will soon miss those brilliant articles which they looked for so eagerly in each issue. However, I may be wrong, in attributing his loss of memory to "intellectual decay." I hope I am—it may bo merely owing to his " thirty years " residence in the " King Country," and a consequent lack of exercise of that function. — I am, See., Youu Special Reporter. Te Awamutu, 23rd February. 1888. [We have always found our " special's " letters and reports reliable and full of valuable information. —En. W.T.
