WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tun monthly meeting of the Waikato County Council was held yesterday at the Council Chambers, Hamilton East, at 2.30 p.m. The following councillors wore pie* sent:—A. Primrose (chairman), J. J. Smith, S. T. Seddon, J. Jjorrost, I ( . J. Johnson and J. .1. I3.iruj?h. Mr T. <>. S.nnlos, County Engineer, was in attendance.
Barugh's Road.—A letter was sent by the Clerk to the Under-Secretary of Public Works, pointing out that this matter was a very trivial one, and instead of Mr Jiwen being put to any loss, Mr Barugh was the. one who had suffered by paying the. sums demanded by Ml' Ewen for rent of this piece of ground, and stating that there was no reason for delay in His Kxcellency issuing the required proclamation to take the land under the Public Works Act. —Cr. Smith asked that a copy of this letter be forwarded to Mr K wen, but the request was not acceded to.
Rates.—Mr W. M. Neil, of Rangiriri, wrote, asking how it was that his rates hud been increased since last year.
Bad Road.—Mr Ralph wrote, enclosing ii letter from Louis Madden, of Tmipiri, calling attention to the bad state of the road "from Messrs Hall and Dilworth's property, of which he was caretaker. He said Cr. Johnson had promised to bring this before the attention of the council, but as he had n it done so, he wished the council would send their engineer to report on the road. The Chairman said that quite recently Hadden had told him that he was quite contented with a road lately firmed by the Kirikiriroa Roul Board.
Wairangi Road.—Cr. .Johnson wrote to the chairman, stating that the contractor for the (iO yards of metal for this road would not accept the job, as it was not as large as he had expected, but he thought that if the job was extended to 100 yap's the contractor would go on with it.I—-The1 —-The Chairman said he could not see his way clear to interfere with the action of the council at their last meeting.—Cr. Johnson said that since lie had written he saw that the contractor had started on the work. The Corse Nuisance.—The Raglan County Council forwarded a copy of the resolution passed at their council re the eradication of gorse and sweet briar, and asking for their co-operation in the matter. The council declined to take any action. Finance.—The Clerk said that the funds of the Council at the present time were very low, there only being a credit-balance of £7 14s 7d at the Bank, and the general fund account was in debt. He then read the riding account which was as follows.— l)r: Kirikiriroa, £71 9< 3W ; Tamahere, £•">3 Is C.V'I; Cambiidge Borough; £78 18s oil. Cr. "Rangiriri, £7310s 2fd ; Cambridge, £132 14s Sifd ; separate account, .£3B 12s 8d : It is proposed to levy an Hospital rate of one-fifth of a penny in the £ in the county which would give £554 3s 3d, and a general rate of id in the £, which would give -Is Id. , , Narrows Bridge.— Cr. I'orrest asked that the hand-rail at both sides of the Narrows Bridge be extended about $ of a chain, so us to prevent cattle from running down under the bridge, and he said that the cost would be about £i 10s, The engineer was instructed to have the work done. Advertising.—The Chairman, in accordance with notice given at last meeting, moved that the resolution passed at the December meeting "That a fair share of the advertising be given to Mr Russell be rescinded. —Seconded by Cr. Seddou. On being put to the meeting the motion was carried, the voting being, for the chairman, Crs. Smith, Barugh and Seddon, ; against, Crs. -Johnson and Forrest.—Cr. Forrest then moved that the whole of the advertising for the next month be given to Mr Russell.— Soeonded by Cr. Johnson.—Cr. S-'ddon moved, as an amendment, that the subject of advertising be left in the hands of the chairman and clerk.— Seconded by the chairman.—The amendment was carried by three to two. Tenders.—The tenders for the following contracts were opened and considered: — Contract No. 10, clearing briar and furze on river bank between Rangiriri and Churchill : Hughes and Willonghby, £23 15s; W. Patterson, £12. As both these tenders were considerably above the engineer's estimate, neither was accepted, and the work was left in the hands of Cr. Johnson and the engineor to be done for £0. —Contract No. 20, forming and gravelling road_ near Huntly : W. Stanley, formation, 0s Gd per chain, claying, Is 2d per yard, gravelling, 2s per yard ; R. Muir, 5s lOd, Is 2d and Is 4d, respectively ; Sutherland and Bridge, 2s Is anil 4s, respectively; Z. Owen and Co., formation. ss, gravelling, Is; J. Ci ombes, formation, 3s 3d per chain, claying, 10.', d per yard, gravelling, 10.U1 per yard. Contract No.' 21, road forming and culvert: —W. Patterson : fascining, £1 10s per 100 ; claying, Is per yard ; culvert, ISs. W. Stanley, fascining, £1 10s per 100 ; claying, 7d per yard ; culvert, £2, (accepted). Contract No. 22, Proctor's crossing : —G. Hill, junr., £13 10s, (accepted); W. Patterson, £17 18s ; Stanley, W. £15 ; G. Cowan, £10 10s.
