ROAD BOARD MEETINGS.
Taotaoroa Road BoardThe above board met at the Criterion Hotel, Cambridge, at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Present: Messrs N. f. Hunt, (chairman), C. M. Drunskill. IT. I. Kallender, and 11. M. BnmsUill. The minutes of the previous meeting were lead and conHi'med. The County Rate. —Mr Tuck, the. Clerk of the Piako County Council wailed upon the board and informed them that the chairman of the council, (Cr. Chepmell), did not think that the road board could legally pay the rates, as arranged at tjio last meeting, out of funds in hands. The Clerk said that when he advise'! the board to pay the rate out of the funds, he was aware that certain legal formalities would have to begone throagh, and ho thought the chairman of the council would have caused them to be carried out. He drew the members attention to Clauses 157 and 158 of the Countioi Act, 1881), and also to Sections (i, 7 and 8, of the Rating Act, Amendment Act, 188"), by which the council could delegate power to the road board to collect the' rate. It was resolved that the clerk write to the council, asking them lo delegate their powers to the board under the clauses of the acts above referred to.
Accounts.—The only account to bo passed was fi-1 10s Id interest on Inscribed Stock, which had been paid on the date when it became due. Balance at Bank.—The Clerk reported a credit balance to date, of £313 3s. Gamhrii>i;bT.u;po Road. -Mr C. M. Brnnkskill said the Government had put £50 upon the estimates for repairing this road. At the last meeting of the council, of which lie is a member, lie had endeavoured to get the matter attended to, but he was in a minority, and therefore was not successful. The Chairman thought the Board should take it over and do the repairs.—Cr, IT. M. Brunskill. No, No ! It is a County road, let. them do the repairs.—The Chairman : Well, someone must do it. or it will soon be impassable. (To the last speaker): If you used the road you would be soon crying out for it to be done.—lt was resolved ',hat the Clerk write to the Council, calling attention to the present unsatisfactory state of the road, and asking them to have it repaired before the winter set in. Gorton Road. —Mr Kallendar snggeste-1 that three dangerous holes on the Cam-bridge-Tnuransa road near Gorton should be filled in.—Resolved that the Chairman should instruct the surfaceman to either fill them in, or grade the sides that they would be less dangerous. This was all the business,
Cambridge Road Board. The Cambridge Road Board met at o p.m. on Saturday, at Bach's Hotel Cambridge. Present: Messrs J. Taylor (Chairman), E. Pickering, .1. .T. Smith, J. P. Thomson and .1. Forrest. The minutes of the previous meeting having been conlirmed, the Clerk reported that Mr Butler had not cleared the road near his property of furze, iu consequence of his having been busy with the harvest; but that he would now proceed with the work at once.
The Enginekh's Account.—The Clerksaid he had looked up Mr Sandes' account and found ho had been overpaid 12s. A letter was received from Mr (rinds* saying he had inadvertantly charged guineas in slead of pounds which accounted for the 12s overpaid; but that there was still 18s due to him, as an account of 30s for supervising works on tho roads had not yet been settled.—Mr Forrest said that in future whon Mr Sande's services were required, it ought to be by special resolution of the Board. Ho did not believe in an engineer being paid for superintending work, which lie just viewed as he passed on his road to Cambridge.—A discussion of a conversational character ensued and tho matter was allowed to drop without a resolution being passed. The Valuation - Roll.—Mr Forrest asked if there would bo a chance of appealagainst tho valuation roll this year. The Clerk said there would not. The property tax roll on which they had to pay was revised every three years ; he expected there would be a crusade against the next valuation.
The Public Dhain.—Mr Forrest repnrtod that he had let the work to be done at the public drain, to Orouoh for fit, which was £1 more than authorised by the board i the owners of property through which it passed agreeing to olean and keep it in repair on their portions. Halfway Road Biuiioe.—Mr Pickering said the halfway road bridge needed repairing. At present it was not safe for a thrashing machine to be taken over it ; indeed Mr Allwill had declined to take his. Mr Forrest thought they could not afford to do anything at it. Hamilton Koao.—The Clerk said it needed the surfaceman upon it, as it was getting very broken in several places. A few days work upon it now would save much expense in the future. Ivuthingwas done in tbe'mattqr. Accounts.—The following accounts were passed :—Half-yearly interest on debt, £24 3s; U. Fitzgerald,'£lo; W. B. Souter, £1 2s; Waikato Timks, 12s. The balance at the bank in credit, £2010s 3d. A letter was received trom Mr Jas. Hally, saying he had let his farm to Messrs Martin, Trodsham,' Shaw, and Mrs Hughes, and asked to have tl|eir names inserted on the rate roll instpad of his own. This concluded the business. ■«
