OHINEMURI.

Sporting.—A meeting of the- Ohinemnri Racing Club was held on Saturday evening last, when it was decided to hold a race meeting on the Paeroa course on St, Patrick's Day. Messrs E. Qniiin, T. E. Shaw, Walter Sullivan, N. Dickey, T. Snodgrass, Jno. Karl and others were appointed stewards, Mr Qainn handicapper, and Mr Edwin Edwards, secretary and stakeholder. Mr W. S. Nicholls was elected president for the year. The following programme was decided upon : — Maiden plate, of 7sovs. ; Maori Race, of 7novs. ; Hack Hurdles, of 7sovs.; Handicap Hurdles, of loaovs. ; Cup, of 20sov.s ; Publican's Purse, of lO.sovs., and a Consolation of osovs. It was decided to register an usual under the A. K.C.'s rules. Bad Rkputk.— Ohinemuri is obtaining a most unenviable notoriety f«r cattle Rtealing. This is probably because of the great facilities offered to those so disposed for the same. The settlers in the out-dis-tricts (mostly miners) who breed and run their cattle in the bush scarcely know them when they see them, and the consequence is they arc often taken from under their very noses. The police, however, have been taking the matter in hand, with the result that two cases have been sent to the Supreme Court, tho last being that of John McGeahin, who takes up his trial for stealing a bull owned by Charles Franklin, of Waitawlietn. Bush Fires.—Several large bush fires have taken place about tho Waitekauri district, and on Saturday night several miner's whares were destroyed. English Capital.—The benefits of English capital are already making themselves felt in Ohinemnri. Mr Seymour S. George has been hero for the past few days arranging for about 100,000 feet of timber to be cut and delivered at Waihi for the new company, and also fora large quantity of bricks. The machinery, which will comprise about 100 tons, will be landed in about three week's time, and Mr Walker, who has been appointed manager, will be here about the same time. It is understood that the shareholders in the late union receive no cash, but simply paid up shares in the new mine. The Rosemont people (five shareholders in all) received £11,000 in cash during the week. Over £30,000 will bo spent on the mine. This should put a now face on the district. MiNiNfs. —As regards the Mammoth, at Karangahake, I regret having to report that it is not looking at all promising. The country is very broken, and the reefs play hide and seek a good deal. The area of the ground is large, however, and there are known to be several good lodes, notably the Maria lode running into the ground. Mr Argall, the representative of the English people, is still here, and assiduously looking after the mine. At Maritoto things are about the same as last week. The negotiations between the owners and the Sydney syndicate are still under way, and nothing is absolutely known as to tho result. I may say that much that has appeared in various papers concerning the prices offered and asked, is totally wrong. Frotri other parts of the district fair news comes in, but nothing of special merit. iiicKN'sixo Ei.kctionh.— The Licensing Committee election comes o(f on Wednesday. Messrs Edward (jiiinn, Snodgrass, John H. Moore, J. Barrett, J. Logan, S. Farner and Cock are nominated. The conclusion is nearly a foregone one, Messrs Qninn, Moore, learner, Snodgress and Barrett being the popular " ticket." CiEOHUiK Smitiison*. — Miss (ieorgie Smithson played here to a good house on Friday night last. Pakhoa, Wednesday. Tin-: Licknsikc Klkctiox. — The election for the Licensing Committee for the Ohinemuri district took place ti-day, with tho following result:—Edward Quinn, 70 ; John H. Moore, 03; Samuel Farner, 57 ; David Snodgrass, 52 ; James Barrett, 37 ; Fred Cock, 37 ; Thomas Logan, 33. Tho first five, were declared elected. Cattlk-stkaling.— John McGeohio, who is out on bail on a charge of cattle-stealing, was to-day again arrested, for stealing a hull, tlw property of William Morgan, of Wiiitekauri. Another charge is pending. ButiH FntES. —The Paeroa-Owharoa road is impassable owing to bush fires.
