Melbourne, February 16. The cars will run as usual next week, notwithstanding the strike of the drivers. The general opinion is that the strike is premature, and that the men have overestimated their strength. Sydney, February 16. The Melbourne Tramway Trust have been applying here for hands to take the place of those now on strike. This morning 500 applications were made. Of these 100 were engaged, and the men have been sent to Melbourne. The Government, having received no reply from the Imperial Government to the communication sent them respecting the admission of foreign warships into Port Philip, have determined to immediately frame regulations restricting the admission of such vessels. At the Centennial Rifle Competition the Cup was won by Mr Page, of the Melbourne rifle corps. With the Cup the winner takes £100 and a gold medal. He scored 206 points out of a possible 245. Adelaide, February 16. The latest advices from Mauritius state that abundant rains have greatly improved the sugar crops, which promise to yield above the average. There is active inquiry for syrup sugar for Great Britain. There is also good demand for sugars suitable for Bombay and the colonies. Greys have advanced od. Shipments for the colonies have been interfered with owing to the scarcity of suitable vessels. Numerous steamers are available for cargoes to Bombay. The Northern blacks are troublesome. A boat has been destroyed on the Roper river, and two men it contained killed. Two Malays have been killed and eaten at Goyder.
THE LATEST. Melhouuxe, February 17. Several of the tramway drivers who went out on strike have returned to work. Men are flocking to the Tramway Company for employment from all parts of the Colony. It is expected that the interruption to traffic will be of short duration and that trams will shortly run as usual.
