Cr Gillett thought it a jiity t| lo t rees could not remain. Or. U, lv chardsou strongly objected to tliu trees oeing interfered with ; they were an oru'tment to the town, and if any oiio else I>ad the premises they would very likely want a tree there. They had spent a considerable sum of money in planting tho street trees, and they ought to be very i careful how they destroyed them. Cr. Loud thought the shade would be acceptable. Referred to Public Works Com- ■ mitt.ee to report upon. Bokoih;h Buildings.—Mr John McGunn wrote offering to lease or rent the large room adjoining the Council Chamber, (until lately occupied as a sample room), for the purpose of holding meat auctions; lie guaranteed to keep it clean. The Mayor said Mr McCann had been holding sales in the room for a considerable time as a subtenant of Cr. Gillett; but the room was now in their hands. The sale was held last Saturday as usual, for which McCann was willing to pay any amount the Council might fix upon. Cr llichardson thought the rent should be 5s per week, as paid by Mr Gillett. Several Councillors thought it should be let by the week, as then if any nuisance was caused the: tenancy could be terminated at once. Resolved that the Finance Committee be= authorised to let the room. Rbi'Out of Wouks Com.iuttke. —The? \V..rks Committee recommended that tho following works be carried out That tbe appioach to the Hour mill be repaired ; tha hole in the street near Mr Russell's dunce bo tilled up; the two holes in K'.ngstvost bu fenced ; and that TluWstr'jet be gravelled from Fort-street tutJta Karapiro bridge. Tho Mayor said th,e«Q were a few dangerous holes in the voa,ii leading to the mill that the surfcyxmvtfi would fill in. lie would alsu SU in the hole in tjueeiistreet, nea.v Mr I'Uv&ull'ti residence, but would, till that portion of it that was i iho 1 road, which it was estimated would take hiin four or five days to do. The holes in King-street would be fenced, the Counoil finding tho material and the surfaceman doing the work. Cr. J. R. S. Richardson said the fence would be in the middle of the road ; but it was pointed out thi.t it was very little used. The report was tho" adopted., I Texdeks roi: Guayei.uni;.—The.'Mayor wiid their gravel contractor had left the tnwii, an.i although they had not received an official intimation, he had thought it. best to call fur tenders, as any t l ll v someonemight want gravel. The Waikato County Council Claim.—. The Mayor drew attention to a report of the last meeting of tho Waikato Oouvity Council thai appeared in The WaikatoTimix of .lanuary ystli, in which Cr. Seddoii—referring to the claim for £,'"8 which. 1 the county had made against tUe Boroughsaid il that it was dishonest of them to shirk thuir debts." Tn malting such a remark,. Cr. Seddou showed his ignorance, for if lie: (Cr. Seddon) had looked at Sub-section o of Section .'iS of the Municipal Corporations Act, ltWl, iio would have been aware that when a Borough was separated from a oounty, the liabilities ana assets should be divided them, according to their rateabJft value. By that the Borough of Cambridge would tako one-sixth. In th.e cnunjty balance-sheet for December 188(5, there appeared, a credit balance of £500, so M'Q Js<>rongl,\ should have received nearly
£00, instead of which they lmd paid £1.0, and were now asked to pay £78 nioio. Or. Clements said if the £78 wiih really ow.ne they would still have to receive nearly i-0 from the County Council. '<• "■ »• Richardson thought Cr. Sedd»n s hincimgi. was unbecoming to any member ot a public body. Tho subject then dropped. Cr. Richaidson said the worst place was opposite the hospital reserve. —The further consideration of the subject was adjourned, to enable Or.
