Tho report of the Legal Committee was deferred. The report of the Bath's Committee was read and adopted. Saw-: Yards. —Cr von Stunner moved the resolution standihg in his name, viz:—" That the Council takes the necessary steps for the erection of public sale yards on the market reserve, or such other sites as may be thought suitable." In bringing forward the above notice of motion, Cr. Von Stunner referred to tho fact thijt for some time past he had been asked by settlers attending the Ohaupo sales why Hamilton had not moved in this matter, and still more recently ho had been assured by one auctioneer that if the saleyards were erected he would hold a monthly cattle sale at Hamilton, the fees oharged for the yards going to the borough for their use. The mover said he bad prepared a plan for the proposed yards with covered way and containing about a dozen pens on either side for cattle, sheep or pigs. This plan has been kindly looked over and examined by Mr T. G. Sandes, who had estimated that it would cost from £300 to £400 according to the quality of the material used. The site chosen tho market adjoining the station yards in Victoriastreet had been chosen because it was their o\vn propprty, it was near tho railway, had been set apart for that very purpose, and would be reached by the back roads from the Ohaupo road and back of Hamilton West. This road indeed occupied one side of the acre on which it was proposed to erect these saleyards, and the portion left would contain ample space for the yards proposed in the plan. The road running alongside being a by road could be used for trotting out the horses at the sale, The yard fees would in all probability more than recoup the interest on the cost of the yards, but this was only <i secondary matter. The great gain to be looked for was the increased business and trade which would be caused in Hamilton in making it the agricultural centre, which its position ontitled it to becomo, and which by such ail undertaking as this they were hastening forward. He also pointed out amongst other advantages of the proposed site that it adjoined the railway yards, and that tho borough had a thirty acre paddock close by which could be rendered available for cattle received the night before tho sale, or for keeping them till next day when the purchasers or owners if unsold could fetcli them away.—Cr. Knox spoke jn favour of the motion. —Cr. Bell s.iid he fully sympathised with tho object, and instanced tho success of Mr Hunter's sales at thq Commercial yards as a proof of the argument that a commodious and convenient public sale yards would turn out well.—Crs. Salmon and Missen supported the motion. Cr. Wood rose to speak, but his remarks were ruled out of order.—Cr. .Tones opposed the motion as he did not think the purposed yards would be a success and instanced the erection of the ones at Frankton bv Mr Jolly, which had proved a failure. The debate was adjourned to the next meeting? of the Council. Laiiour.—C. McKenzie was employed as borough workman for another period of six months. Stkkkt Lamps.--Complaints were made of tho insufficient manner in which some of the street lamps wore being lighted. The Clerk was instructed to draw the attention i;f tliß contractor to this;.
