TE AROHA.

JJISAI'I'KAKANUK OF A OTOUKKKKi'hJH. — (il'OHl anxiety has been caused here by the dis appearance of .Mi- T. H. W. Yate. storekeeper, Wairongomai, who left his residence on Thursday afternoon during tin absence of his wife at Te Aroha. On hei return homo between five and six o'clock she found on her dressing-table a note frou. her husband, in which he referred to amis matters connected with business, and appended to it there were a couple of lino.stating that he whs going somewhere to lit himself clown to die, for he was tired of In.life. Half distracted with four for his fate, Airs Yate at once communicated with some triends, and information was also sent to the police station, but Sergeant Kmersou was unfortunately away in another part of the district. Quickly as the tidings became known a number of residents of both townships turned out and, forming themselves into parties, searched tho nighbonrhoo<] until darkness set in. The quest was resumed at daybreak on Friday morning, but up till noon today no trace has been discoved of the missing man. Though not in embarrased circumstances Mr Yate has been for some time in a despondent state, aud'dnring the last two days has not partaken of food. In his weak condition it is. feared that bis mind lias become affected, and the gravest doubts are entertained as to whether he will ever be found ulive. A Gallant Ki-kcuk.—On Wednesday evening, as some little boys wore bathing in the river above the township, one of their number, a little-fellow about eight years old, named George Comes, came near meeting a premature death. Carried down hy the current, he got into deep water, and the other lads were unable to render him any assistance. Hearing their cries, Mr Wed Smithyinan, who chanced to be near the spot, at once hastened to the rescue, and without hesitation plunged into tho water. The boy had by this time disappeared under the surface, but after diving two or three times lie succeeded in getting hold of the youngster, and brought him to the bank, where, remedies being applied, he gradually recovered consciousness. The incident should prove a warning to parents to try to prevent their children from going into the river, as there is scarcely a place in it that is safe to bathe in for those who cannot swim. Railway Extkxsion'. —The scheme propounded in the press recently by Mr James Mackay tor the development of the mineral wealth of the Thames Peninsula—viz., by the completion of the Thamos-Te Aroha railway with branch lines to the principal gold fields and reduction works at convenient places—is commanding attention here. It is generally regarded as the most feasible scheme that has yet been placed before thu public, and one that would lead to most important results. Te AitOHA, Friday. No trace of Mr Yate has been discovered, s-eaieh parties have been out all day, and the river has been examined but without result.
