The first meeting of creditors in the above estate was hold yesterday atthe Courthouse, Cambridge, before Mr John S. Edgecninbe, Deputy Assignee. Present: Messrs R. .McVeigh, J. Hally (representing several creditors), W. B. 'Sonter, G. Shirley (for Buckland and Co.), and V. J. Brooks (for trustees of Reid's estate,) The statement of accounts, already published, showed 33 unsecured creditors, amounting to £1203 JOs, and one secured for £50 by a bill of sale over his furniture. Assets nil. Tho bankrupt said he had no offer to make, if he had a clean start ho would do the best he could for the creditors. After he had been asked a few questions, it was resolved that the Assignee be instructed to recommend that the bankrupt be granted Ins discharge as quickly as possible. The bankrupt's sworn statement was as follows:—I am a contractor residing at Lichfield. Before I went to Lichtield I resided at Richmond. I owned a farm of 350 acres. I paid for it about six years ago ; it was unimproved when I bought it. I expended about £1000 on the farm, which I borrowed from tho New Zealand Land Mortgage Company at the rate of £8 per cent, per annum. About nine months ago - the New Zealand Lind Mortgage Company sold tho farm under tho mortgage for £300; the balance shown in my statement, £700, is still due to the Company. I have lost money on several contracts during tho last four years. This, with the depreciation in ! value of my farm and stock, has been the cause of my bankruptcy. The bill of sale ! over my furniture was given about three i years ago, as near ms 1 can recollect. I hold a policy in the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States. I insured about twelve months ago for £200. I have kept no books, and hnvn no banking ac- ■ count at present.—(Signed) F. l>. R. i Smai.k. ' A telegram was received from Mr W. M. i- Hay, saying that he with others intended opposing Mr Smale's discharge, but those present did not think anything would be gained by doing so. The meeting then closed.
