S. ANDREW'S CHURCH, CAMBRIDGE.
<$> — The annual meeting of the members of S. | Andrew's Church was held in the scliool- ! room on Friday evening, at S p.m, Archdeacon Willis presiding. The following is ; a summary of the report and balance sheet submitted :— • Repoht of the Vestry of St. Andrew's Church. Camrridge, for the year end- [ iNtv Dec. 31st., 1887. ! "The pastoral work was a good deal in- ; terfored with throughout the year, by the 1 several efforts made during its course, for | the reduction of the Church Debt. At the 1 last annual meeting the reduction of the debt was set down ilearly as the great effort of the year, and the work has been ' carried through with enthusiasm. On no 1 previous occasion, not even when the Church was in course of erection, was so ' general an interest manifested in any work ' of the Church, and in the heartiness, good feeling, and sympathy which has been called forth, and so largely manifested by many at a time of great need to the Church, and withal of much suffering amongst the Church's members. " Owing to small attendance it is pro- ! pos?d in future to discontinue the services at Cambridge West. The Incumbent would thus be free to more frequently visit the important district of Tatnahere. At Ohaupo there is increasing need of an enlargement and improvement of the Church, ' and it is hoped something may soon be 1 done in the matter. I " The district had the advantage of an ; extra visit of the Bishop at the close of tho ' year, paid in anticipation of his being absent in England during the greater part of 1888. It is tho general wish and hope that he may enjoy his well-earned holiday, and return with Mrs Cowie and his family re- ' freshed and re-invigorated. r " The school at S. Andrew's is increasing J in efficiency and attendance. Instead of 1 the annual Christmas school fete tho carnival was this year taken advantage of to give the children a day's entertainment. " Early in the year, at the request of the choir, the Vestry appointed Mr \V. O. Garland to the office of choirmaster, and the 5 choir, assisted by some friends, raised the ' money to pay him a small salary. 1 "The attendance on Sundays averaged : 1 morning 101, evening 77, an increase of 10 per cent, on last year. There were 20 persons confirmed. The baptisms were 41, the marriages (one at Tamahere) 8, and the burials 5. " The great work of .'the year has been a substantial effort to reduce the building j loan. In March the Fete, held in Major J Wilson's grounds netted £77 Is 4d; the 1 Welca and Dramatic entertainments £9. 3 The instructive chemistry lectures by Mr ? Ward netted £1 10s 3d. Then followed the Christmas Carnival, netting £153 10s lil, in addition to which there is about 5 £10 worth of goods still on hand. Sub scriptions for this work had_ also realised £70 3s Id. The parish contributed £17 10s Sd as special offertories, which, with a few other small sums, enabled the Vestry to reduce the loan by £275, and to pay the interest due to the end of the year amount--3 ing to £52 10s. "The balauce of the debt now stands at £275. "The Church and school are is good repair. The roof of the parsonage is some- . what leaky, and the whole exterior should s be at once painted. The question of en- > largcment should be faced as soon as / possible. 3 " The thanks of the parishioners are due to the lay readers, the Sunday-school teachers, the members of the choir and the guild of ringers for the regular performance of their several duties, also to Major and Mrs Wilson for the offer and use of their grounds, and to all others who helped in the ) various special works. The heartiest r thanks of the parishioners are due to Mr 1 George Shirley, who, although a oom--1 paratively recent arrival in the district un--3 dertook and organised the management of ; the late Carnival with his accustomed energy. , " Briefly summarizing the work of the year The attendance at the Church Services has increased, tho number of communicants is greater, the offertories have been no less, the attendance at the Sunday School is larger, the Church Loan l is reduced by £275, the accrued interest of f £5210s is paid off, and the indebtedness on the ordinary account has not been added to. " " War. N. de L. Willis, " Chairman of Vestry." The balance sheet for the year ending December 31, 1887, showed, receipts £384 10s Id.
