SWIMMING RACES ON THE WAIKATO RIVER.

w A coNriiiiKKAKi.K number of people assembled on the Hamilton Bridge and along tho west bank of the river on Saturday afternoon to witness the swimming competitions for Anniversary Day, organised by the residents of Hamilton East. The course was marked out from above the baths, down tho stream to the old ferry landing, opposite which Mr Bell's launch was moored for the judges. The various events were well carried out and keenly contested, being watched with much interest by the spectators. With the exception of a keen wiu>! blowing, the weather was fine: — Bovs' Rack (under 1(5). Prize, 30s. Half-a-tuile. Gelling 1 Ne.ilson 2 O. Cox, A. Sage, A. Lc(,>uesne. and G. Vincent also started. The two latter soon dropped out, and tho mce lay between (Jelling aud Noiluon, who kept well together. Mkxs' Rack. 1 mile. Prize, £3. Kiely 1 Missen 2 D. Nelson also started. This was a close race. Missen led all the way till near the finish, when Kiely, who had passed Neilson, was allowed to take first place. Boys' Rack (under 14). J mile. Ist. 30s ; 2nd, entrance money. J. Pascoe 1 Fred Cowper 2 Seven started, viz. : C. Edwards, P. Murray, J. Pascoe, Fred Cowper, J. Neilson, J. Hill and J. Gillett. A good start was made. Cowper went too far out into the stream, and found himself behind the others, but gained ground rapidly, and at the bridge shot ahead and took fourth place, close behind Pascoe. Edwards and Murray, being over age, were disqualified. Loxg Divk. Prize, £1. Tristram ' 1 Dalton 2 Consolation Rack. Owing to a dispute over the mens' mile race, boys were only admitted to this race, which was won by W. Neilson. Gkkasy Boom. This created a good deal of amusement, and was won by Dalton, with Reid second.
