TE AROHA.
Man, Skhvice.—There does not seem to be the slightest probability that the wishes of the inhabitants of this district with regard to .1 daily mail service between here and Auckland .ire liknly to be mot by the Government. A second communication upon the subject was sent by the Town Board some three weeks ago to the PostmasterGeneral, and in reply thereto a letter lias just been received by the qhairipan from the secretary of the Postal Department. From the to'nc of the letter it would appear that theiv is no intention on the part of the Government to increase the sub* sidy of £27 «s first offered to Mr V,. Gallagher tor the conveyanqe of the mails between here and Morrinsvillo on the olftrain days. It expresses regret •' that l)e (Mr Gallagher) cannot see his way to meet the wishes of the residents bv accepting the payment which the Government has offered," and concludes with the statement that "the offer is still open, and the Department would be glad to make the desired improvement in the service at the cost named." From this it is evident that any further effort to induce the Govenment to give the. larger subsidy £54 12s, asked for by Mr Gallagher would only' result in a waste of time. If the daily service is to be re-established the residents themselves will' therefore have to add to the offer made by tho Department; and in a matter of ho much importance to the whole district there ought to be no difficulty iij raising tlje amount required. GOM< at i'ATETKUß.—Practical and exhaustive tests of the value of the auriferous stuff said to exiet at Pafcetere are about to be made. Messrs Adame and Clerk junior of the Waiorougomai battery proceeded to that district a, few days ago for the purpose of making arrangements for having a number of shafts sunk and portions of the deposit taken from them sent to be operated on at Messrs Firth and 01 Ws Wtery. It is proposed to select about a hundred tot's <!f dij't from different parts of the Patetere Company's property, and this quantity will be reduced by concentration to about thirty tons, and then forwarded to Waiorongoinai, where it will be treated under the supervision of MiAdams. These trials may be expected to f.ettlo the question as to whether gold in payable qiirfntjlies does or does not exist in ,the localities'ln'e'ntioned. ' Rat.n 7 Fall.—Since Friday last occasional smart showers of rain have' fallen "throughout (th.e district, fortunately iiot in Buflicieiit quantity to interfere njaterially with harveHting operations, In Brisbane, Queensland, £15,100 has been given for a block of land 50 ft. by 90ft.
