DBRIGANDAGE IN TURKEY.

TltK brigand season, writes a Janina. correspondent of the Levant Herald, is at its height. We are consequently confined to town, and, though surrounded by charming- country, obliged to pass the summer in dusty disease-breeding , street*. Only porsons who are notoriously not worth capturing dare travel without n big escort, even in the immediate neighbourhood. There has been some severe lighting on the Santi-Quarauto Road, and two troopers have already lost their livo?. Indeed, if the authorities do not speedily grapple with the evil, wo *haH be in the same wretched plight as last year. Then the brigands actually tried to snatch n bishop from a dozen well-armed cavalry men, and were only beaten oil after a sharp and bloody strug-glp. Such was the boldness of the plundering fraternity that bands did not hesitate to come down to the very edp'e of the lake and seizo victims in full view of the fortress. One unlucky woman waa pounced upon close to her village home in the midst of a score of people, and kept prisoner till ransomed with £7000. The spectators beinK unarmed could not assist her. But I will not trouble yon with a list of those who have been carried up into the mountains, It is enough to say that the wholo district round about lies at the mercy of the brigands.
