Information lias been received that a Mr Walker, who had been a settler at Maelicolo Island, went to Pontieost Island labour recruiting, when the natives enticed him ashore, and lie fell into an ambush. The natives opened fire, and he was wounded with a rifle shot, and then being set upon, he was killed with axes. A Maelicolo native, who accompanied him, was also killed, but three others escaped into the bush. Those on the ketch saw the murder perpetrated, but were powerless to prevent it. Several murders are known to have been comitted at the same spot.
