Miss Jessio Grey, a young lady staying at McFarlane's Station at Coldstream, was found dead in her bed yesterday. Charge Against a Solicitor. A warrant was asked for in the R.M. Court this morning against a solicitor of this city upon a charge of obtaining money under false pretences on the 31st December from Caleb Edmonds, brewer, Petone. The informant stated that the accused had presented a cheque for £2 to hia (informant's) receiving goods to the amount of 18s, and £i 2s in change. The cheque was drawn on the Bunk of New South Wales, but upon being presented, was returned marked, "No Account." The informant saw the drawer of the cheque, who promised to pay up on the following Saturday. He did not do so, and proceedings were accordingly taken. The presiding justices declined to issue a warrant, as thoy thought the matter could be just as well proceeded with on a summons. Sir Charles Mitchell. Sir Charlos Mitchell, Governor of the Leeward Islands, left Wollingtcn this afternoon for Melbourne by the Te Allan. The Late Fire. Professor Kirk received a telegram on Saturday evening, from the ranger in charge of the Puhipuhi forrest, Auckland, stating that a change of wind combined with rain, has confined the fire which broko nut last Monday to the dend wood, and at the time the message was despatched it was travelling through fallen timber along the old road to the Bay of Islands. The intelligence is satisfactory as it shows that the magnificent forest was in no way in jured up to Saturday night. Rear Admiral Fairfax has received advices of the arrival of H.M.S. Egeria, at Hobart, on 2nd inst. The Egeria has come from China via Albany, and is to bo engaged on survey duty.
