Picnic at Tuhikaramea.
The picnic at Tuhikaramea on the 28th December, in aid of the funds of the District Hospital was a decided success, the wind preventing the heat from being oppressive. The gathering was smaller than was expected, but those present undoubtedly enjoyed themselves. The refreshments which were really excellent were kindly provided by Mesdames Alderson, Davis, R. Drabble, J. Drabble, Hadfield, F. "Vickers G. Vickers. Miss McMickfen and Mr R-'.id, the supply being far in excess of requirements, and would have satisfied more than 200 hungry visitors. The piece de resistance of the day was of course the cricket match between eleven ladies and eleven gentlemen, the latter bowling leit-handed ana batting with sticks. The game was well contested and was by no means the one sided affair one might have expected. I append the scores. The sum of £3 8s was collected, which will go to the Hospital cloar of any drawbacks.' To Mrs Alderson is due the credit of initiating a movement that might well be imitated in other parts of the district. In conclusion whilst acknowledging the kindness of Messrs "Vickers in throwing their grounds open to any amuseirents or sports, 1 would suggest that if a gate was placed on the road leading through their farms, it would save strangers a great deal of inconvenience to which they are liable at present in finding their way through a labyrinth of fences to reach a paddock adjoining the road.
