The birth of the new-born year happening on a Sunday, the demonstrations usual period were of a tamer and less noisy ch.nacter than is customary on such an oe casion. Appropriate music discoursed by the Arolia Brass Band made the welkin ring for a time, and at the Hot Springs Hotel thero was a handsome display of Chinese lanterns and rockets, but little else worthy of note occurred to mark the passing away of the old year and the advent of the new. ... ~. On Monday the annual picnic of the school children came off in a paddock by the river side the use of which was kindlv given for the occasion by Mr G. Lipsey. There was a great gathering of the little folks who to the number of about 120 and headed by the bra-s band, marched in procession from the school ground with their teachers and others to the sjene of the day's festivities. Thero they were joined during the day by a large number of their seniors and the weather being delightful a most enjoyable time was spent by all. An abundance of everything to please the juvenile palate had been provided and the fun ran fast and furious until the shades of evening brought the day's proceedings to an end. On Tuesday evening the service of song known as Uncle Tom was given in the Pub- | lie Hall by the Wesleyan Church choir. The building was moderately well filled and the performance was a very pleasing one, the readings being given by the Rev. S. Lawry and the muscial portion of the service by the choir assisted by several friends. The service was followed by a tea and coffee supper to which a .large portion of the audience remained.
