LATEST AUCKLAND NEWS,
[BY TELGOEAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Auckland, Wednesday. Thf, Hon. E. Mitchelson has received a cablegram from Melbourne, stating that the Summer Races of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club took place on and that in the Summer Cup his horse, Escutcheon ran second to Mozart, Gardenia being third. It would appear from the cablegram, that Escutcheon was crossed during the race, and a protest was entered by the latter’s trainer, which was not sustained by the stewards. A sham fight took place at the North Shore to-day by 500 or GOO men from the warships. The inanmnvres were witnessed by a large number of spectators. The "speelers" arrested at Ellerslie on Monday were brought up ta-day and remanded for trial on Friday. There was a rumour to-day that another yacht with 21 persons had gone down, but it is generally discredited.
