OUR FOOTPATHS.

1 10 THE EDITOIt. Sir, —The utter waste of money in putting sand, and of bad quality at that, on the footpaths in Victoria-street is only equalled by the absurdity of the same. Because some councillor happens to say that the paths are bad, on goes a lot of stuff which will be a curse to the locality for many a day to come—mud in wet weather and dust in tine, destroying everything that comes in contact with it, will be the order of the day. The work is a useless, senseless one, and a disgrace to the whole council who allowed it to be carried fj'ut. X nqtice, too ( that the councillor who proposed the repairs (50 caller' 1 did not allow any of the rubbish to go on in front of his own door. He evidently knew enough for that; but others who, like myself, will suffer loss must put up with it quietly, I suppose. For my part I cannot see that I pan be prevented from removing | the rubbish where it affects p.y property, and this I intend to do. The' mess being made of the road near Mr Campbells residence, too, is simply a disgrace to any public body, and when the present contract is finished it will be a laughing stock for all who have any knowledge of road works. Thb improvement.;, save fhe mark ! will make the approach to the hill absolutely worse than it was.—l am, Sir, yours truly, A StTFERi.vc Burgess. Hamilton, 10th December, ISS7.

At the Club; “Has Boodles beep roupd this morning;* “Yes; lie was in for a minute. Did you expect to' see him?" “IVel}, the fact js he he owes me a little money, and was to settle up to-day. | don’t suppose lie mentioned it to you?" “Ha! Well, not exactly, ileonly, tried to borrow it from me to settle with.”
