Drain at Hautapu.—Air Smith thought the public drain at Hautapu should be cleaned. Now that the dry weather had set in, as much could be done at it in a week, as it would take a month to do in the wet. He should also like to know who had given Mr Deere permission to put a dram across the road. Mr Forrest said he agreed with Air Smith that what work was done at'the' drain shofilq fie done when the weather was dry, but he was averse to continued sums of money being spent upon it. The drain was about three miles long, and it took a large sum to thoroughly cleanse it. He contended that the settlers through whose farms it passed should pay a little attention to it—he did himself—and if they saw a faulty place, they should at once endeavour to remedy it. Instead of doing so, most of th'eiri'lfit it get chokei| up, He kept his portion clear, and passed the water on to the next man. It they would all do so, there would not be any trouble about it. When the big drain was put in Air Deere refused to subscribe towards the expense, and then he afterwards cuts a drain across a fb'aq, without the permission of the board. He then moved that Air Beep be requested to put pipes across the' whole of No. 2 Cross Road, and that his attention be’ called to the fact that he had put the drain in without having obtained the permission of the board.
