Inquiries made by the Minister of Defence proved that the story of a concentration of the Torpedo Force at Wellington, and a display here had its origin in the report that General Sehaw desired such a test to be made. Mr Fergus saw Major General Whitmore this morning and told him that he did not want any tests of this character. At the R. M. Court the charge against Patrick Ferguson for playing the three card trick on board the T'e Anau v/as dismissed, tho magistrate holding he could not convict either under the Gaming and Lotteries Act or Police Offences Act. Under the former Act it had not been shown that the ship was a public place, and under tho Police Offences Act cards arc not instruments of gaming, although they are under the Gaming and Lotteries Act. Charles Watson has been arrested on a charge of a criminal assault on a girl under 12 years ot age, and was remanded till Saturday. In consequence of the Government not renewing the vote for training colleges the Education Board have resolved to give the teaching staff of the training college three months’ notice. The mayoral election resulted in tho reelection of Mr S. Brown, by a majority of 340 votes.
