CAMBRIDGE.

Narrow Escape From a Serious Conei.a c ration. —Dnke-street had a narrow escape from being destroyed by burning on XhurHcbiy afternoon, and but for the timely discovery of the incipient fire a very serum* disaster would have befallen tin? town. A man named Bishop, who is gardener t» Mr Gillett, had gone with a message to Mr R. W. Sargent, and while wailing at the back of that gentl email’s premises noticed a decided smell of burning wood coining from the direction of Mr Kincaid’s bouse, next door. On investigation it was found tb.it a fire was smouldering underneath the shingles of the roof of the kitchen, and luckily by ripping off the saddle-boards and some shingles, a few buckets of water extinguished the flames. Mrs Kincaid, who .was naturally very much upset and alarmed by the occurrence, is entirely unable to account for the origin of it, as no fire had been used in the kitchen that day. It is extremely fortunate that the fire was discovered at such an early stage, as had it once taken hold, with the half gale of wind that was blowing at the time, it is very unlikely that any of the buildings in the neighbourhood would have been saved.
