Butchers have paid a fee of £5 5s for a license, which gives them a monopoly (or ought to do so) in the meat trade, but a few farmers in the neighbourhood of Cambridge and Hamilton have taken to supplying these towns to a very large extent, but as they slaughter on their own farms ami are not slaughtermen, the Resident Magistrate holds that they do not commit an oifunce, coiise quently the Act is null. Tlie Council thinks that if a man slaughters for sale lie is a batcher whatever occupation he many follow, and ought to be licensed. I'nle-s the .section in question bo amended, or the Resident Magistrate be induced to read in accordance with the meaning convoyed in the side note, ’ the Council will have to abandon the working of the Act altogether in January next. 'Every butcher in Waikato kills his own cattle on his own farm.”
